We support the plants to support the insects to support the birds and animals and other plants...

Planting keystone native species helps the entire ecosystem of which we are a part.

RESTORING NATURE: Studies by entomologist Dr. Douglas Tallamy have shown that three native plant genera, which he labels as โ€œkeystone plants,โ€ are more supportive of our butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) than any others. They also offer pollen and nectar to bees, wasps, syrphid flies, and other pollinators and provide habitat for stem-nesting bees.
โ€ข The goldenrods (Solidago genus) serve as larval host plants to 115 Lepidoptera species.
โ€ข The asters (Symphyotrichum and Eurybia) support 112 species.
โ€ข The sunflowers (Helianthus) rank third, supporting 73 species.
โ€ข A variety of other native perennials, including bonesets, sedges, violets, milkweeds, and phlox support anywhere from 42 to 4 species of moths and butterflies.
