May long weekend in Canada: the unofficial start of planting season here in 🌷

Also Canada: surprise snowstorm 😂

So instead of planting this morning, I was out in the garden rescuing tulips before the snow could snap them in half.

These beauties are actually leftover bulbs from previous years when we grew tulips for cut flowers. We tucked them into the garden to perennialize, and now every spring they come back putting on a show. This patch is a mix of Red Dress, Mango Charm, Princess Irene, Pretty Princess, Blue Heron, and a few others that clearly didn’t get the memo about spring weather.

Honestly, tulips in the snow might be one of the prettiest combinations.

Do you grow tulips? Which variety is your favourite?

Our first bloomer of the season is our Princess Irene tulips.

These started as cut flower bulbs three years ago, and we decided to leave them in the garden to perennialize. Since then, they’ve returned every spring with beautiful blooms.

A few tips if you want to perennialize tulips in your garden:

- Plant them in a full sun location
- After blooming, cut off the flower stem and avoid letting them go to seed. This helps the plant direct its energy back into bulb growth.
- When trimming, leave at least two sets of leaves so the plant can continue feeding the bulb through mid summer

Another option is to lift the bulbs once the foliage has fully browned:
- Gently pull them out, brush or wash off the soil, and allow them to air dry in a cool shaded area
- Store them until fall planting season
