It is a way to keep track of what each year is like including weather, successes, failures and just about anything related to gardening and growing plants.

Despite the temperatures below 0C last night, everything wrapped in blankets and tarp made it. Had to have the heater in the greenhouse on most of the night. Now that the sun is full on it, it's 33C in there. The peppers are loving it!

It's our first official frost tonight. I have been monitoring the temperatures in my back yard and this will be my third. I have a heater set up in my greenhouse and just turned it on to boost the temp. After this we're supposed to have much warmer Temps for at least a week. Glad to gave more time for my peppers. I'll take some photos of them on the weekend.

Here's some photos of the pepper plants when they were on the deck and the greenhouse with my experimental tomatoes.

I am glad I have been picking tomatoes all week. And I only have about 8 more plants left to pick. We had frost last night and after covering a reduced number of plants for 2 nights I've had enough. So one more night of covering tomatoes and all the tomatoes will be picked. And yes, I have tomatoes everywhere.

I have included a couple of photos of my Nasturtium plants to confirm frost. My Kale is loving the cold.

Unsure of what to do with my garden. The forecast for Wednesday is a low of 2C, but with my location, we could get frost. I spent today pruning extra leaves and branches off some of my tomatoes so they ripen quicker before the forecast changed. (I have no problem picking green tomatoes and letting them ripen inside.)

I struggle with when to pull the plug. Not sure if I should cover everything or just pick all the big green tomatoes and leave all the cherries out and cover them. I have all my test tomatoes in my greenhouse but likely need to get rid of some to move my peppers in.

The weather forecast is changing constantly. To be honest, I'm tired too. Last year I had plants out until October 24. Not sure I have it in me this year to do that. Sigh.....

We've been struggling with huge bare areas in the lawn and thistles and tons of dandelions. Add a WSW facing yard and no trees and it looked terrible. We refuse to put a sprinkler out there because utility rates are ridiculous.

A month ago I put down 5 bags of top soil and added a ton of clover seed mixed with a super tough drought resistant grass seed. I watered it once each day only with a handheld sprayer just so it was moist. Luckily we had 3 or 4 good downpours too.

FFW to today and the whole area has filled out and there is a ton of clover growing and more sprouting. I'm looking forward to the whole yard being covered in clover and having a beautiful green yard with no watering.

I am also adding raised beds with a cattle panel arch to grow zucchini, squash, and cukes next year.

I planted my Kale late. Despite that, I have tons of it. This is a third of what's in my garden right now. Safe to say I won't be buying Kale for months! I'll be interested to see how much I get by the end of the season.

Garden update:

It's been a busy summer with the weather all over the place. Definitely not so blazing hot, so my tomatoes have been much happier and it looks like I am going to have a bumper crop. Surprising because my plants looked terrible when I brought them outside. I had lots of extra to sell but didn't dare. And my peppers were small and sad because I dropped one of my seedling trays.

Fast forward to now and everything is looking great. I have 167 tomato plants in containers in my yard, 109 tomato plants in my greenhouse (these are experimental ones - watch for an upcoming post about them) and 129 pepper plants. I also will have Green tomatillos for the first time. I have garlic, onions, herbs, and strawberries on my deck plus Kale, mini cukes, carrots, beans, zucchini and onions in a new garden bed. (I'll post more about that later.) Its going to be another good year for salsa!!

PS to those people who had wanted tomatoes or pepper plants, they just looked too terrible to sell to anyone. I'm shocked that my plants look so good now. Next year will be better. I likely will have all kinds of tomatoes for sale this Fall if you're interested.

***I had to discard 186 tomato plants this year for various reasons. I switched soil from what I normally use when I transplanted my seedlings. No fungus gnats but not enough nutrients either. I will be switching back next year. And starting less too.

Well I rescued this Hibiscus from a pop up garden centre. It was in pretty bad shape and was in the $10 clearance section. It bloomed for the first time on Friday - a beautiful yellow flower and now today 4 more flowers. There are many more flowers forming. I have a feeling I will be taking quite a few photos over the next while.
