Why Do Some Vinyl Stair Nosings Crack More Easily?
Many people assume that the durability of a vinyl stair nosing depends only on the thickness of the wear layer.
The wear layer is certainly important, but assuming the wear layer is the same, the machining process can also make a significant difference to the strength of the finished vinyl stair nosing.
One of the key factors is how much PVC material is left behind the bend.
If the groove is cut too deep, the vinyl stair nosing becomes much easier to bend. However, very little PVC remains to support the corner. Although it bends more easily, the finished nosing has much less structural support and is more likely to crack over time.
If approximately 1/16” to 1/8” of PVC is intentionally left behind the bend before heat forming, the finished vinyl stair nosing becomes significantly stronger. The trade-off is that this manufacturing method is much more difficult.
With more material remaining, the PVC must be heated very evenly. If one area becomes hotter than another, the material can crack during the bending process. It requires better temperature control and much more patience than simply cutting a deeper groove.
The result, however, is worth it.

So when comparing vinyl stair nosings made from the same flooring material and the same wear layer, don’t just look at the surface. The machining method behind the bend is also a key factor that affects the strength and long-term durability of the finished product.
Sometimes, the quality of a product is determined not by how easy it is to make—but by how carefully it is made.
