The Truth About Drought-Tolerant Planters
Sun Plants Have It Easy, Shade Plants Are Harder
One of the biggest misconceptions I encounter when designing planters is that shade containers are easier to keep looking good during a drought.
In reality, it's often the opposite.
There are many annuals that thrive in hot, sunny locations with less water, including:
• Geraniums
• Lantana
• Succulents
• Portulaca (Moss Rose)
• Angelonia
• Zinnias-Drought-tolerant once established in the ground.
• Gazania
• Scaevola (Fan Flower)
• Verbena
• Dusty Miller
Shade, however, presents a different challenge.
Most shade-loving plants evolved in environments with more consistent moisture, so relatively few plants are both shade-tolerant and drought-tolerant. Some of the more resilient options include:
• Tradescantia
• Wax Begonias
• Creeping Jenny(not an annual but often used as a spiller)
• Vinca Vine (not an annual but often used as a spiller)
When creating water-wise planters, plant selection is only part of the equation. Success also comes from:
• Choosing larger containers that retain moisture longer
• Using high-quality potting soil
• Grouping plants with similar water requirements
• Reducing soil evaporation with dense plantings or mulch
• Watering deeply when needed rather than frequent shallow watering
As drought conditions become more common across Alberta, thoughtful plant selection can help reduce water use, lower maintenance requirements, and keep containers looking attractive throughout the growing season.
