Practical Impracticalities: Lessons from the Classrooms of Professional Practice

Speakers:
Mr. D Cameron Gillies, Sessional Instructor, University of Calgary
Dr. Henry Tsang, Associate Professor, Athabasca Architecture, RAIC - IRAC

Venue: Sheraton Hotels & Resorts Vancouver Wall Centre | Chandos Builds Better Room CE18
Date: May 15, 2024
Time: 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Abstract: Architecture is facing increasing disruption to traditional practices. The professional practice course is an architectural student’s window into the profession that teaches not only how the Architect works, but also the dos and don’ts. The architectural profession is evolving so quickly that a snapshot of it today would be practically obsolete by the time students enter the profession. The professional practice course tends to be a misunderstood component as it is often unclear how the content is relevant to students. Foreign-trained architects taking the course also often struggle with the course as it fails to deliver comprehensive instruction for them to integrate and thrive in Canada. As the profession shifts towards a more socially responsible role for the Architect, are there lessons from classrooms that can inform practice? This session promotes a trilateral discourse between practitioners, educators & students on the role that professional practice courses play in shaping architects in Canada.

Disappearing Chinatowns: A Tale of Canadian Culture, Identity, Racism & Architecture
Dr. Henry Tsang, Athabasca University Centre for Architecture RAIC - IRAC
Dr. Matt Patterson, University of Calgary

Abstract: The presentation is based on recent findings of “The Politics of Placemaking in Chinatown”, a SSHRC-funded research project investigating how Chinatowns across North America have adopted cultural planning and placemaking strategies in order to protect and revitalize their neighbourhoods in response to several challenges, including gentrification, demographic changes, and anti-Asian racism. The project looks at Chinatowns from both a sociology and architecture point of view and seeks to make the connection between its community and its built environment. On one hand it looks at the past and heritage of Chinese immigrants to Canada, their settlements in Chinatowns and on the other through the occupied and built spaces. By studying Chinatowns, as a by-product of immigration and also unique neighbourhoods of North America, the project to define the history and heritage of the Chinese and Asian-Canadian community through the design and planning of the ‘towns’ and their architecture.
