Calgary’s city center vacancy rate currently sits at 29.2%. But this crisis also represents an opportunity for reinvention. SPECTACLE worked with Alex Bozikovic of the Globe and Mail, along with three other design firms, to come up with some recommendations to address the problem.

SPECTACLE currently has an opening for a Student Intern for the period September to December 2020. Applications will be accepted until August 14 2020.

Applicants should:

- currently be studying Architecture in a Canadian post-secondary institution
- have strong graphic and design talent
- have strong rendering skills and familiarity with Rhino and Sketchup
- be competent in the use of Adobe Creative Suite and AutoCAD
- possess excellent craft and model-making skills
- be fluent in written and spoken English
- be self-motivated and comfortable working collaboratively
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status
- have an interest and capacity to undertake research and synthesis
- have an interest in innovative and sustainable architecture and urbanism

Jessie Andjelic of SPECTACLE has won the 2019 RAIC Young Architect Award!!!

Jessie Andjelic, MRAIC, is an architect, urbanist, and educator based in Calgary, AB. She runs a practice, regularly lectures on architecture and urbanism, teaches, and mentors intern architects.

Third place!

Spectrum, in collaboration with REDBrick, took home the third place prize last night at the City of Edmonton Missing Middle Competition awards reception. Congrats to all the other winners including Studio North, Leckie Studio, RPK Architects and Holo-Blok.

Missing Middle assumes there is an ideal sweet spot between downtown tower and suburban house models. Our project takes the position that people want to live on various points across this spectrum, and that a range of diverse living units will create a more vibrant mixed community, greater inclusivity, and greater accessibility. A spectrum of density across the site transitions to the low neighbouring houses and rises up to a landmark on the southwest corner.

Loopy and the Six Parks is an active transportation loop of mini parks that connects together six communities in SE Calgary. With a unique topography, each park can be used by all ages, in various ways, and for different types of active transportation including walking, running, parkour, rollerblading, and cycling. Surfaced with the Coalition Stripe - a rainbow of the six Community Association’s logos - the bike path connects Bumpy, Holey, Scoopy, Groovy, Bendy and Bowly so that citizens are encouraged to explore and play across community boundaries. Heigh ho, heigh ho, it’s off to play we go!
