When can I plant Tomatoes outside?

In Calgary, May long weekend is usually considered the beginning of the gardening season. Many brave gardeners hedge their bets and plant earlier in hopes the weather stays warm. Be ready to cover your frost-sensitive plants with plastic domes or cloth sheets in case a late frost blows in. We have approximately 115 frost-free growing days in Calgary, compared to Edmonton's 140 days and Vancouver's 215. Our proximity to the Rocky Mountains shorten's our growing season, causing frustration to many novice and experienced gardeners.

So, what can we do to have good results growing food and flowers in Chinook country? I suggest looking at the weather forecast around May long weekend. Choose your plants wisely and get to know which ones can tolerate cold and which ones don't. Peas, kale, spinach, snapdragons, pansies, and sweetpeas can go out now.

Tomatoes and other frost-sensitive plants are best planted after May Long weekend if warm or the first two weeks in June if cool. Rushing these plants out early when cold does them no favours as they won't grow.

This uncommon Polish heirloom produces clusters of 3-4" tomatoes that are long and pointed, weighing 5-8 oz.. Fruit is meaty, nearly seedless with little jell. Flavour profile is a balance of savory acid with a sweet fruity undertone. Opalka peels easily without being dunked in hot water. Vines need support.

Looking for a great Beefsteak Tomato variety to grow in your Calgary garden?

A Russian variety also known as Sakharnyi Pudovichok, is a large red beefsteak with dark pink flesh. Tomatoes are solid and meaty with few seeds and will weigh up to 1 pound hanging in clusters of 3 to 4. Fruit will set even in cooler temperatures and has been successfully grown in Calgary and area. Indeterminate/vine habit needs support and grows well in containers 5 gallons or larger or in your garden. Sugary Pounder tomatoes have superb sweet tomato-y flavour, perfect slices for your BLTs.

Pink Berkeley Tie-Dye Tomato is Deliciously groovy!

Beautiful dark pink tomato with green stripes. Developed by Brad Gates of Wild Boar Farms. Indeterminate/vine tomato will produce 7-12 oz. fruits with outstanding flavour-sweet, rich dark taste. Compact vines need support and grow well in large containers or beds. Early mid-season heirloom variety. The picture is from tomatoes grown in my Calgary garden as this variety is a family favourite!. Delicious drizzled with balsamic vinegar, fine olive oil and salt.
