We are seeing more and more education around this which is awesome, but I couldnβt help but stop to snap some pics of these ridiculously mulch bermed parking lot beds.
There is no reason these beds need to be so full. I assume over the years the maintenance companies managing the lot kept quoting to mulch, as a form of slow season revenue, and just continuously installed mulch upon mulch at the risk of the treeβs health. Thatβs not to mention the mess of that soil/mulch washing onto the walkways during heavier rains.
Mulch has its place but should not be bermed up the trunk of those trees. I guarantee the trees here are suffocating/rotting and the roots may be girdling.
In your own gardeners you definitely want to ensure when you install mulch you leave some clearance from plant stems. If you have gardeners working for you then have a discussion about other slow season tasks they can do to keep them busy, not just mulching. I bet they have great ideas and would love having other streams of revenue this time of year to keep their crew busy.
