A quick note regarding hatching eggs from The Painted Nest šŸ£

As many of you know, I hatch eggs here myself and regularly monitor my breeding groups. Fertility is something I take very seriously, and I do everything I can to ensure quality stock and healthy, productive breeding pens.

That being said, once hatching eggs leave my property, there are countless factors that can affect development and hatchability. Storage conditions, transportation, handling, incubation equipment, temperature fluctuations, humidity, turning schedules, power outages, and even things that happen before an egg is ever set can all play a role.

For that reason, hatching eggs are sold as-is and I cannot guarantee fertility, development, or hatch rates once eggs leave my care.

I will always do my best to help troubleshoot issues, answer questions, and work with customers when concerns arise. However, I cannot be held responsible for circumstances outside of my control after eggs have left the farm.

I stand behind my birds, my breeding programs, and the quality of the eggs I offer. Anyone who has followed The Painted Nest for any length of time knows how much pride I take in what I do and how much time I invest into maintaining strong, healthy lines.

I couldnā€™t be more proud of the young man youā€™ve become.

Youā€™ve seen things in life that no child should have to see. Weā€™ve been through bad relationships, moves, different schools, hard times, and more changes than I ever wanted for you. I wasnā€™t always the perfect role model, and truthfully, half the time I was completely winging it as a parent. But somehow, through it all, here you are.

Kind. Hard-working. Responsible. Strong.

Life could have taken you in so many different directions, but every day you choose the right path. Youā€™ve held your first job for almost a year, you save your money, buy your own things, and carry yourself with a maturity far beyond your years.

For the last 16 years, youā€™ve needed me.

Now I find myself needing you too.

I need you to stay my baby, even while you grow into a man. I need you to still call me when life is good and when life is hard. I need you to know that no matter how old you get, no matter where life takes you, Iā€™ll always be here. For the wins, the losses, the mistakes, the celebrations, and everything in between.

You are the greatest accomplishment of my life. Nothing I will ever do will compare to the privilege of being your mom.

Coop progress day 4

If you donā€™t look at the gaps, you donā€™t even notice theyā€™re there. šŸ˜†

New tabletop p**p catcher is in the works.

Floors and walls have been sprayed down and then torched with my new tiger torch from Amazon. Friggen steal of a deal.

Every bit of straw that comes down, every piece of vapour barrier that goes up, and every sheet of chipboard that gets hung makes me feel a little better. What started as finding a few mites has turned into a full-blown coop overhaul, but honestly it was probably overdue anyways.

Almost close enough to get a load of sand brought in.

Still have nesting boxes to build, a new brooder area to make, flooring to finish with one solid piece of proper vapour barrier, and the second half of the roosting bar/p**p table to finish.

A few days ago I felt completely overwhelmed. Now Iā€™m finally starting to feel like Iā€™m getting ahead of it instead of chasing it. I think I might actually have this problem under control. šŸ˜…šŸ”

No one said it was going to be easy .. but I know itā€™s sure worth it.
My cuts arenā€™t straight.
I have straw in places I shouldnā€™t have it.
I used the wrong screws for this entire wall and then wondered why it was so hard getting them in ā€¦

Iā€™m learning as I go.
I have a vision.
And Iā€™m going to make it happen !
0 bugs on any eggs today .. that I can see.
Soooo that makes me happy.

I swear this week feels like a bad dream I canā€™t wake up from.

First, the roosters have apparently chosen violence. Between getting attacked and taking a fall, Iā€™m already over it.
Pinched nerve ? Shoulder bruised.

Then Loki, my giant goober, decides to have a Lyme flare-up with a side of bacterial infection on his face. Vet visit.

The dumped-off kitten that showed up here? Vet visit too. Again. Because apparently people think our property is an animal drop-off location every six months. This oneā€™s a male. We named him Riftā€¦ short for Drift. Because heā€™s clearly a drifter.

AND to top it all off, Iā€™m dealing with my first-ever mite problem.

Yesterday I noticed tiny little specs moving on an egg. Today the main coop is getting an overhaul.

The straw insulation in the walls was a great ideaā€¦ if I had put a barrier behind it. Live and learn.

So now weā€™re tearing things apart. Vapour barrier is going up. New walls are getting hung. Every nook and cranny is getting sprayed with Elector PSP. A tiger torch arrives tomorrow. Every bird has already been treated.

Goodbye pine shavings. Roost bars are getting lowered. Iā€™m building what is essentially a giant litter box for the chickens and switching things around to make cleaning easier moving forward.

Honestly, I was planning a main coop overhaul this year anywayā€¦ but I wasnā€™t expecting the universe to force my hand quite this aggressively.

Now the important questionā€¦

Whoā€™s paying for all this?

And more importantlyā€¦

Whoā€™s doing it? šŸ˜­šŸ¤£

Also, what sand is everyone using thatā€™s safe for chickens?
