Black trim, black doors, downtown Canmore.

This one on 1st Street started as a peeling-trim job. We sanded everything back to sound wood, sealed it with a specialized peel-resistant primer, and finished in a high-performance exterior black — top gable to ground floor, same prep throughout.

Then the doors. The entry and garage doors had faded to a tired, chalky tan. We prepped the metal, primed it and sprayed them in Benjamin Moore Black Beauty — a rich black with a hint of warmth — so they'd match the new trim. Same doors. Nothing replaced.

The exterior window in the Bow Valley gets short from here, and our fall calendar is close to full. If you're planning an exterior for next year, this is a good time to let us know — spring dates go to the people who ask early.

Most people worry about the mess, not the colour.

Fair enough. Before any paint goes on, a day looks like this — floors covered, windows masked, sills taped, walls repaired and sanded flat.

It's the part nobody photographs. It's also the part that decides whether you're happy when we leave.

This is another Stewart Creek condo for us, in Canmore — some for owners, some for property managers. Word travels in a building.

If the black trim on your house is peeling, it probably isn't because someone used cheap paint.

Dark trim in the Bow Valley lives a brutal life. Black soaks up sun all afternoon, nights drop toward freezing — about 150 days a year here cross that line — and the UV at this elevation never lets up. The wood underneath swells, shrinks and bakes until the paint has nothing solid left to grip.

Eventually it lets go. That's what we found on this 1st Street home in downtown Canmore.

The fix isn't another coat of black. It's getting back to sound wood, a primer built to resist peeling, and a high-performance topcoat. The lift means trim three storeys up gets the same prep as trim you can reach from the ground.
