Definitely recommend getting some compost from Glen Road Organics! I have seen it in action and it does a great job of adding nutrients and beneficial critters to your soil! They're basically farmers of microorganisms ☺️

It’s that time of year again, where we want you to prep your gardens for a great spring planting!
Buying fall compost introduces beneficial microbes that will work under the snow to breakdown your garden waste and have beautiful soil ready to plant in the spring!

This is Hobblebush, Viburnum lantanoides! One of my favourite understory forest shrubs ☺️

To identify if what you have is hobblebush, look to the golden dusty buds, they're in the shape of praying hands 🙏. Their leaves are opposite to each other, with flowers/berry clusters at the leaves base. They stay relatively small, with a max height of 10 ft (which is not super common). Most commonly found at the 2 - 6 ft height.

What makes this shrub so special?

Well, it can be a really great indicator that the forest you are strolling though has what is know as a telluric water table!!

Now a telluric water table is a mineral rich flow of underground water from higher elevations into a lower lying areas of a forest. This helps to create a deeper loamy soil, allowing for certain species to thrive; like hobblebush, yellow birch, maples, etc. It is a consistent flow of slow moving water packed with yummy plant nutrients, so this area of a forest doesn't have much in the way of stagnant water and you see some faster growth in some the plants. For species that thrive in moist soils this is an excellent place to grow!

So, next time you're walking though the woods and spot a hobblebush I hope you think about the possible telluric water table you might be walking over ☺️

He has such a lovely nursery, with a great variety of plants to choose from. I definitely came home with more than anticipated! (See last two photos, heehee)! It is worth the drive to go and check it out.
