Found this article that we thought might give a little insight into planting a new lawn or overseeding an existing one.

W**d control is always listed as the first concern of homeowners interested in fine lawns. W**ds are highly visible in an otherwise uniform lawn and keep infesting weak lawns that have grasses unable to compete with seedling w**ds.

Where do these w**d seeds come from? Not from the grass seed mixture you have planted, probably, but from the soil.

Even the best cultivated and productive farm soil contains w**d seeds. The types of seeds found in the soil vary with the soil source, but no matter where your lawn soil came from and no matter how long it has been there, it contains large quantities of w**d seeds, perhaps as many as 4 million in the top 6 inches of soil for each 1,000 square feet of lawn surface.

These seeds survive in soil for years, ready to germinate and grow when conditions become favorable. Usually not more than 5 percent will start at any one time, but this can amount to 200,000 potential w**ds for every 1,000 square feet. Thus, even before you plant the first lawn grass seed, you may have hundreds of thousands of w**d seeds waiting to compete with it. High-quality lawn grass seed of new, improved named varieties is required for best results.

Lawn grass mixtures may contain some w**d seeds; the label will say, but they will not be identified. Certainly, the fewer the better, but the major source of w**ds in the lawn will be the soil itself, not the grass seed mixture.

Good morning everyone,
As some of you know Rick had surgery 5 weeks ago and I know some of you are wondering how he is doing. He is recovering slowly and is starting to do more. We saw the surgeon last week and the tumor was cancerous but they were able to remove it all and he doesn’t have to have any treatments thankfully. He will be starting back to work at the beginning of July. Thank you to everyone for your patience and understanding as we have had to deal with all of this. These last couple months have been quite the Roller Coaster ride but you will see him out and about soon. A very thank you to our employees Eric Klassen, Michael Riedstra, Tyler Brown and Carter Veenendaal for taking care of our lawns and everything else that needed to be done, we couldn’t have done it without you.
