We figured we'd interrupt your scrolling momentarily to show you this amazing heating solution we put together for our customer. The home had a 40 gallon hot water tank for domestic hot water, and a 40 gallon hot water tank and a pump that served the in-floor heating. If the in-floor got too hot, you simply turned down the tank temperature but the pump ran continuously. While it did "work" it wasn't the way it should be, so we went to work transforming the space.

We completely cleaned everything out to start with a clean canvas, then installed a Navien combi-boiler that serves the in-floor heating and provides tankless hot water. Next we split the floor zones up and added 3 thermostats for precise heating control, and installed 3 ECM pumps that use 80% less energy than comparable non-ecm circulators. This system will greatly improve comfort, safety, efficiency, ease of diagnosis and service, and provdes the homeowner more metrics to see what their heating system is doing and best of all it custom fits our customer's needs.

Very touching review left by a new customer today that we wanted to share with our followers.

It comes down to experience and data. We will never show that a part requires replacement without some kind of data showing it. That's why we use top notch diagnostic equipment and train as often as available to keep up with the latest in technology and installation/service practices. Unfortunately in this case it came down to the parts that were replaced were not setup correctly causing issues with the functionality of the furnace, and as always the data proved it. The data always proves it. We love educating our customers and in most cases encourage them to watch as we perform maintenance or repairs.

When you have a home you've invested in or a family you take care of, it's important to have safe reliable working gas appliances (notice that didn't say shiny or new...) . We had a couple of customers wake up with no hot water this morning. Our fabulous dispatch team re-arranged our day and we were able to slam in 3 quality commercial-grade AO Smith hot water tanks to make sure our customers had hot showers for the weekend and still be wrapped up in time for happy hour enjoying the sunshine.

Check out this shiny new AO Smith Commercial grade water heater install we did this week. What don't you see here? Flex connectors on the gas or the water lines.

I know what you're thinking and yes they're approved by code for installation (usually). I also know that yes they are "so quick" to install (I have used them in the early days before I knew better). So what's the issue?

Work on them after the warranty expires and you'll understand. Water likes smooth laminar flow. The corrugated copper style connectors love to get pinholes between the ribs because they cause turbulence by design and wear out the copper. We've replaced many. Of these due to failures. Alternatively the braided steel connectors are rubber inside. Over time the rubber becomes hard, breaks down and you get rubber chunks in your waterlines and faucet aerators.

So what's the solution then? We don't settle for anything but quality products. We use all commercial grade Type L copper with Viega ProPress fittings on our water heater installs. Propress is just as fast in most cases as flex connectors, and it promotes full smooth laminar flow for maximum longevity especially with Strathmore's hard water. It's just one of the many things we do to continuously improve our processes and give our customer the best value for their dollar. It's what we would do in our own home. The "Other guys" said they had to replace their 2007 Furnace, but did they? Here's the story:

This customer had one of the "other guys" out to look at their furnace for a no heat call in the evening. They were told the inducer draft blower was toast, it was going to be over $1200 to fix but they allegedly found cracks in the customer's heat exchanger so they said the furnace "needed replacement". Luckily we were called in for a 2nd opinion. The draft inducer blower was fine (we had data to prove it), and after a real expert diagnosis the issue ended up being a replacement furnace board for under $600. Quoted the customer for the repair, it was accepted, the repair performed and they were on their way with a warm home once again. Did I mention we inspected the heat exchanger and found zero cracks or "pinholes" as they stated? We aren't even sure the tech's pictures were from the same furnace.

We believe that you can do honest work and do what's best for the customer and get a paycheque that way without the high pressure sales scare tactics. If something feels off with the service you've been provided, it probably is (this is why they dress nicer and have flashier vans than we do.. 😉) . Have you ever noticed that new furnaces have heat exchangers that don't seem to last as long as the old ones did? Have you ever heard of friends or family upgrading to "high efficiency furnaces" and not saving any money on their heating bills or having more issues with them? You are not alone. Your furnace is sized to overcome the heat loss of your home on the coldest day of the year, but what about the other 364 days of the year? If your furnace isn't sized correctly or optimized correctly for your home you can actually lose efficiency when replacing it especially in the shoulder seasons despite the furnace listed as 95%+ efficiency. Hoar frost. It's pretty but it can take it's toll on ventilation and heating appliances. This is your friendly reminder that if this fence looks like this, your furnace vents, plumbing vents and fresh air intakes likely don't look too much different. Save yourself an emergency service call this weekend and go outside and ensure they're free and clear of frost to avoid failures. If you have vents on the roof that need attention we can recommend a trusted local roofer that can assist with those. Stay safe and stay warm, and as always give us a shout if you need assistance or temporary heat.
