Make sure you give my page a follow if you don’t want to moss out on when this very rare plant goes on sale!

Betcha didn't know!?
You can use spent disposable hand warmers as ... plant food!?
Yes! Disposable hand warmers are filled with 100% nontoxic iron oxide, charcoal, perlite or vermiculite, and salt water! Even their respective websites suggest mixing the filling into your compost as a conditioner. Though this only applies to the filling, not the plastic pocket it's in. That, unfortunately, is garbage.

Making a moss box!

Moss boxes are a fun and easy way to propagate those tender tropicals and soft stemmed plants you may own. By creating a warm, humid, and well lit enclosure, you can ensure you'll have cuttings for whenever the urge to create a new terrarium hits you.
Photo 1. Base layer. It's best to use something light and airy but also mineral so it won't rot away. Expanded Clay products like Leca, Turface, etc. work great at keeping moisture and have enough pore space to keep away rotting. Perlite and fancy clay pellets work too, but be sure to wash them or filter out fine particulates, so keep up porosity.
Photo 2 filtration!
Moss, coir, or even a plastic mesh keeps your growing substrate from falling into the base lager bottom and ruining your airflow, etc.

Remember to KISS
Keep. It. Simple. Stupid.
Fancy Rubbermaid boxes are fine, but the dollar store works just fine for botany nerds on a budget. You don't need a purpose built "greenhouse" labeled piece of plastic. As long as it's clear/ clearish, you're golden. Add a few tiny holes in the lid for gas exchange. It's not too big, or too many, though. As it may throw off your humidity too much.

Personally, I prefer to use sphagnum as it breaks down very slowly. But it lacks nutrients, etc. So I like to roll the spaghnum in my Terra soil to make it dirty. Thus adds nutrients and extra growing media AND inoculated the box with springtails, micro isopods, and other micro invertebrates that munch in any mold/moldy leaves they may find.

Just add plants. Wait a few weeks and voila.

One of my Tillandsia ionantha is blooming!!

When air plants hit the scene and Saskatchewan, I told myself one thing. "Don't buy any unless you're going to properly keep them,"
By and large, the genera needs adequate atmospheric moisture and adequate light. Especially the more xeric species like ionantha , caput-medusae, and tectorum. So, I designed a semi sealed terrarium with adequate hanging space to maximize air flow and a moisture retaining substrate that keeps the air inside humid. Add a nice bright light and bingo bang your Tillandsia will change color and bloom 💜
