These local customers wanted the exterior of their farmhouse to get freshened up.
The concrete sills under each of these windows had been painted at one time, but were all cracking and peeling. They needed to be hand scraped, primed and repainted . The customer chose “Bittersweet Chocolate “ as the colour for the sills.
The vinyl shutters were also pretty sun bleached and faded. With the customer, we looked at some numbers and found that the cost of painting them was about 1/4 of the cost of replacing with new. So I colour matched the paint from a new door that had been installed semi-recently, and added a coat of paint to all 30 shutters around the house.

Another day, another deck.
Minimal prep for this one which was such a treat. The deck gets lots of sun and is swept semi-regularly, so there was no algae or mildew to treat.

ReadySeal-Natural has the least amount of tint and still offers UV protection, as opposed to the “Clear” option which has no UV protection.

The deck and porch are only a couple years old and still in good shape. Starting maintenance early makes future maintenance much easier.

Back at this Bayfield customers house for some deck/stair staining.

Shoutout to 9House Contracting for the deck modifications, and the new back deck overlooking the lake. Excellent work.

The customers wanted a very dark stain to go with the dark trim around the cottage, so I went with Cutek Extreme, and used a double serving of the added colourant (Black Ash) per gallon.
It can be difficult to get a solid, even colour coat with a penetrating stain, especially with wood of varying condition and age.

You can achieve an even, uniform colour with a solid or topcoat “stain”, but I generally don’t recommend those products as they will begin to flake and peel. Once the solid/topcoat starts to fail, it looks terrible, fast. To get back to baseline you often need to use a deck stripping product which is pretty labour intensive and makes a big mess.

With a penetrating stain, it gets inside the wood for maximum protection, and doesn’t flake or peel. When it’s time for another coat, you simply clean off the deck, maybe a light scrub if there is mildew or algae, and then fresh coat of penetrating stain.
We bought years of extra life for these wood structures with the penetrating stain!

Thanks to these great customers for the work.

These Bayfield cottage customers wanted the aluminum flashing around their windows and doors painted black. The eavestrough and flashing will be swapped to black in the future to finish the look. I’ll also be back here in the future to stain and seal the decks.
The colour is Tricorn Black ( from Sherwin Williams) in Benjamin Moore Aura exterior Low Lustre.

It’s such a treat getting to work by the water, and doesn’t hurt getting rotating shade throughout the day. Thank you for the work!

These Zurich customers wanted to brighten up some rooms on their main floor as well as the stairwell and upper floor of their home. This home was being prepared to go on the market and is now listed.

The customers chose a Sherwin Williams colour “Muslin”, and I used this colour with Benjamin Moore Regal Ulti-Matte. Older homes gather a long history of dings/scratches and imperfections. Many of these can be repaired, but using a lower sheen paint reduces the visibility of any remaining imperfections even further.

Approximately 150 nail holes were filled, sanded and sealed, along with some minor baseboard repairs and touch ups.

Going from dark to light can sometimes be tricky, so some of these rooms required a full 3 coats to properly cover.

I appreciate the real estate photographer letting me use their photos, since I forgot to take my own ‘after’ photos.
Best of luck with the house sale to these nice customers.

This recently purchased Bayfield cottage was a mix of brown, yellow, green and blue. These customers wanted a consistent colour throughout (Greek Villa) and some fresh colours on their doors.

I’ll be back in better weather to paint some exterior trim, window frames and doors. This was a nice quiet week and a worthwhile project.

Going from darker colours to lighter will often require a full prime coat plus two colour coats, or three coats of the new colour, even with Benjamin Moore.

Eggshell sheen everywhere except the bathroom, where we chose Aura Bath and Spa Matte. I’ve been using a fair bit of the Bath and Spa paint lately. The fumes aren’t great, but the finished effect is excellent, especially on walls with some minor imperfections as the matte sheen makes those imperfections less visible.

Grey is out! At least, that’s what I’m hearing. These Bayfield customers felt that their main floor felt cold and blah. We went with Swiss Coffee colour which has warmer undertones, and is cleaner/brighter.

Two bedrooms, one office, one bathroom, two hallways, one laundry room, kitchen/livingroom/diningroom and a two fresh coats on the large basement ceiling. The customers were very pleased and even found that their carefully curated decor and furniture looked even better with the new colour!

I was also spoiled, daily, with the best lattes I’ve ever had! This was a very enjoyable job for some excellent customers.
