Pleasant Bay, early May.

Structure holding while the garden begins to loosen.
Naturalized bulbs moving through a perennial framework, last year’s stems left to carry light and pace.

A slower edit this time of year. Letting the composition reveal itself before intervening.

A client shared their fall garden with me. Designed last winter and installed this spring, the plants are establishing beautifully. I love the drift of sky blue aster mixing with September Charm anemone.

Our Walton project in Port Hope has been unfolding slowly and steadily — a 600 sq ft. limestone perch overlooking the ravine, built stone by stone with intention, is complete!
The planting design mirrors the structure: tap-rooted and shallow-rooted perennials, grasses, and shrubs chosen to knit the slope together and prevent erosion.

Most patios shift with time, but this one is crafted to endure. Perhaps it’s no surprise that, as a neurodivergent couple working together, this kind of patient, meticulous detail work speaks to us.
To me, a garden’s true value lies not just in its beauty, but in its integrity — in the way stone holds, roots anchor soil, and birds find safety in the branches overhead. A well-built garden is a legacy, resilient enough to withstand time, weather, and change.

The wheel in the sky keeps on turning, and just like that, it’s time to start considering, planning, and ordering bulbs for spring magic.
I’ve learned that planning is never about rushing into decisions—it’s about waiting for the right wave of clarity. Designing for bulbs feels like that: a slow, thoughtful process of visioning spring before it arrives.
This week I’m sitting with my bulb list, letting myself dream in layers of tulips, daffodils, alliums, and fritillaries. I take my time. I imagine how light will fall across the garden in April and May, how the energy of the space will feel after winter’s long rest. It’s always actually a very simple palette where I recall my trusted favourites (Queen of the Night and World Friendship) as well as finding something new to try.
Something fancy.👒

Fall planting is an act of trust. We tuck beauty away into the soil when the days shorten, knowing that it will rise again, often brighter than we imagined. It’s a reminder that cycles and timing matter—and that clarity always comes if we give it the space it needs.
So if you’re planning your own bulb order: take your time, follow the rhythm of your inner seasons, and let spring call you forward. Comment below what you will be ordering and planting this fall 💐

The world feels heavy right now. From record-breaking heatwaves and wildfires to the human rights atrocities in Gaza, there is so much grief, injustice and uncertainty pressing on our collective spirit. It can feel paralyzing- too vast to hold. The work of a gardener, of creating beauty, can feel irrelevant.

And yet, gardens teach us that even in the hardest of seasons, there is resilience and there is renewal. Planting trees, preserving food, tending soil, creating spaces of sanctuary - they are small acts of affirming life and of insisting on hope in the face of despair.

To me, the golden light of August is to notice what sustains us, to root ourselves in care, and to keep choosing regeneration- for the land, for our communities, and for a more just and livable world.

I talk about this and more in the August newsletter, which you can subscribe to via my bio link.
