What's the right amount of flooring to order — and what happens if you get it wrong?

Most people assume you just measure the room and buy that amount. That's where the trouble starts.

Here's a quick breakdown:

🔹 Always order more than your measurements say
A standard rule is to add 10% on top of your square footage. For diagonal installs or rooms with a lot of cuts and angles, go closer to 15%. Offcuts, mistakes, and waste add up faster than you'd expect.

🔹 Matching later is harder than you think
Flooring comes in production runs. The box you buy today may not be available six months from now — and even if it is, the colour and texture can vary slightly between batches. Running short means gambling on a match.

🔹 Keep the leftovers
Once your floor is installed, hold onto whatever planks remain. If a board ever gets damaged — a deep scratch, water damage, a repair gone wrong — you'll have an exact match ready to go. Without it, you're starting from scratch.

🔹 Room shape matters more than square footage alone
Long, narrow hallways. Closets. Stairs. Odd angles. Each of these eats into your material differently than a clean, square room. Measuring the total area doesn't tell the full story.

A missed call. A vague answer. Work that didn't quite match what was discussed.

📋 You may need written approval before any work begins
🏢 Not all flooring types are even permitted — some buildings ban hardwood or restrict nail-down installs entirely

Luxury vinyl plank is measured in mils. Budget options often have a 6–8 mil wear layer. Better quality starts at 12 mil and up. That gap shows up fast in high-traffic areas.

🔹 How it feels underfoot
Cheaper flooring can feel hollow, thin, or loud when you walk on it. A thicker core and attached underlayment make a real difference day to day.

🔹 How it handles the edges and ends
Low-cost options often cut corners on click-lock systems and finish edges. That's where early wear, lifting, and gaps tend to start.
