Birds…. especially small birds like song birds seem so vulnerable and frail, don’t they? Yet they can fly full force into a window, collide with a moving vehicle or survive an attack from a predator that is 100 times their size! I wonder if Mother Nature purposely made them that way. Whereas their bodies are frail, but their spirit is strong! Whatever the case, looks can be deceiving and in this recent patient, a Spotted Towhee, it couldn’t be truer. This little guy faced off with a dog. Can you imagine? That would be like us facing off with King Kong! I doubt we would walk away from such a situation, but this towhee did. Well not exactly walked away. In fact, this little guy survived this trauma with two broken legs. Gyl our extremely skilled manager who is an expert at splinting teeny tiny legs (twigs really); splinted both legs. Surprisingly this little towhee is eating (I’m not sure I would have an appetite after all that!) and is being hand fed every 30 minutes. Here’s a question. If you broke both your legs and were in a cast how long would that be before you could walk again? This little towhee will likely have his splints removed within the next 7 days! Talk about bouncing back! Mother Nature is remarkable and so are all those that work at the hospital.
