Blue Jays and Robins for tick control

With ticks popping up everywhere right now, we’re all worried about our kids and pets. While you can’t prevent ticks entirely, there are a few measures you can take to minimize the risk:

Plants🌱
Some plants naturally repel Ticks, so use them as barrier plants around your garden or play areas: lavender, lemon grass, rosemary, thyme, catnip, garlic, marigolds and chrysanthemums. Mint is also highly repelling, however it can turn invasive quickly, so only plant it in containers where it can’t spread uncontrollably.

Local Birds🐦‍⬛
Our local birds like Bluejays and Robins are essential to bird control, so put up bird feeders!

Mulch:
Mulch is tricky for ticks to surpass, so create a 3-foot wide path around areas that you are trying to keep tick free

Chickens: 🐣
If you have the space, add chickens to your backyard, they are amazing for bug and pest control

High quality sod saves you time, effort and money…because not all sod is quality sod and when you’re spending the money and effort to green up your garden with sod, you want to be certain that the stuff you’re putting down is high quality and worth your money.

We bring in Premium Kentucky Blue Grass from Bluegrass growers up in Alberta. It is known for its elite cultivar blend, which gives it better disease resistance and season adaptability.
Unlike bunch forming grasses, Kentucky Blue Grass spreads naturally to fill in thin or damaged spots, which reduces the required maintenance in the long run.
It’s Hardy! We get those cold winters down here in the Kootenays, but the sod we bring in is touch and comes back thriving every year!

In honour of Senior’s day, here are a few reasons why you should garden, especially in older age:

1. Gardening is considered a moderate aerobic exercise and, therefore, supports your cardiovascular health through continuous movement. It also increases your psychological well being, which lowers your cortisol levels (the stress hormone that doctors are always worried about)

2. Daily exposure to sun drives your body to produce Vitamin D, which is a nutrient that supports calcium absorption, bone health and overall immune system function.

3. Gardening reduces the symptoms of depression and anxiety. As a gardener you’re never done learning, and the learning of new skills increases people’s self-esteem and self-empowerment.

4. Lastly, we all know that life is just better in the garden and it increases life quality significantly…unless you’re fighting the weeds of course

These health benefits of course apply to all ages, but are of particular importance for older individuals 😊

If you’re 60+, you save 10% today! And we will be playing your favorite oldies and goldies on the stereo! See you at Top Crop from 10-6!

Pass this knowledge on to someone who would benefit from gardening ☺️
