On my way to the studio this morning, this song came on in the car and I was taken back to 20 years ago when I was indeed, young. When Halifax was new to me. When my airplane landed and I knew no one here. When I waited tables at Fife&Drum, and worked in the Morris Street studio until 3 in the morning. When Ramen and the NSCAD food bank got me through the end of the term when I was broke as hell.

Now, 20 years later I am entering the second and final year of my MFA, and life looks very different. I share my life and home with a family I never imagined was possible. My friends are my extended family (you know who you are!) and I haven’t felt a homesickness for Alberta in over a decade. Living and working in Nova Scotia has been the best decision of my life.

And these youngsters at NSCAD orientation today, entering their undergraduate programs, remind me of the time before, when where I am now felt very far away. I hope they get as much out of their experience here at NSCAD as I have, and that their lives after they leave here are as full and fruitful as mine has been.

So that is today’s nostalgic reflection. One day a song will come on the radio and remind you of when you were young, and you will see that version of yourself in the ‘kids’ who are entering where you are now.

Macarons have been my guilty pleasure this summer. They are sweet, light and just special enough to feel like a treat.

This will never not be one of the coolest things about living on the east coast. Welcome back HMS Charlottetown.

Quiet mornings on the water. Soon my daughter and I will jump in the lake and alternate from wet to dry bathing suits between swims until it is time for bed. This quiet weekend is a much needed break. I have been busy! I recently shipped a large order of work to a gallery in cape Breton, including these garden flower mugs, in small and large sizes. If you are in the Margaree area, check out Two Macs Gallery for the best selection of my work in Nova Scotia right now.

I pulled this recipe out of a magnolia magazine several years ago, intending to attempt macarons. Since our trip to Paris this past spring, my daughter and I have finally put it to good use! These little treats are very finicky to make, and last about as long in this house as you can imagine. These little dishes I make are the perfect size to hold them :)

If these mugs could talk… oh wait but they can! Each of the mugs in the show at is displayed alongside its own monologue. Some playful. Some existential. Each work is a little piece of the artist who made it. Worth a visit to the gallery to read each alongside the mug. Also, tomorrow is Mother’s Day 😉.

Peonies and friends. One of three special mugs made just for opening at tomorrow! The gallery is open from 12-5, and I will pop in early afternoon to see the other artists work if anyone wants to say hi.
So excited to be showing my work alongside some pretty great artists, whom I have long admired ❤️.
