It’s not that paint is expensive, it’s that painting can be a big undertaking and doing it more than once is annoying.
Here are our top tips to assist you in making your best paint choices:
1. If you are choosing a light coloured tone - choose a tone one shade darker on your paint swatch than the colour you adore. Light colours (regardless of sheen) reflect natural light and look lighter than the swatch when applied - particularly in a room with a lot of natural light. The same tip is true of painting any colour outdoors. Opt for one shade darker than you think you want for exterior projects.
2. Always buy great quality paint. It’s rare we say “always”…but…this tip is not to be overlooked. Paint is science, a recipe, and incorporates important technology. You absolutely get what you pay for in this department. Paint is expected to stand up to the washing, resist fading in direct sunlight and endure the wear and tear that comes from rubs from kids, colleagues or pets. (This is even more true on exterior projects when seasonal elements are involved). Our favourite brand is Benjamin Moore Aura. (This is not a paid advertisement.). We’ve used it personally and professionally for years and nothing stands up like it. Not heading to the city before your paint project? Try Beauti-tone Designer Series from Home Hardware. It’s our preferred paint available locally.
3. Select your sheen carefully. Matte sheens are brilliant for expressing velvety rich dark colours but don’t stand up well to frequent washing or high traffic areas so use them carefully. Our general go-to for wall surfaces is an egg shell sheen. It doesn’t traditionally have a lot of shine - just enough to tolerate the occasional wipe down and the goings on of life. Stick to satin or semi-gloss sheens for baseboards, trim and doors. These surfaces take highest abuse in most spaces and these sheens traditionally stand up well to it all.
