By late afternoon it's getting dark. In November, the daylight you do get is worth every square inch of glass.

A picture window doesn't open, and that's the point. No sash, no meeting rail, just frame and glass. Put a casement or awning beside it when you want fresh air.

Living near the water is great until salt air gets into the door hardware.

Celesta multi-stack patio doors offer an optional stainless steel housing made for saline environments. The panels run on a double roller track and stack inside the frame, so a wide opening doesn't eat up floor space.

For our rain, the sill drains on two levels, and an anodized aluminum cover hides the drainage holes and keeps debris from clogging them. It lifts off for cleaning.

Every Vinyltek window is built on Annacis Island in Delta, about 20 minutes south of Vancouver. We've made vinyl windows there since 1986.

The Boréal single-hung suits older homes with dormers like this: the lower sash slides up, the top stays put, and it keeps the look of a traditional sash window. The frame is 100% virgin uPVC, sealed with four layers of weatherstripping.

Sliders don't have to be white.

Primera single-sliders and single-hungs come in Black, Polo Charcoal, Kendall Charcoal, Rideau Brown, Pelican Grey and Anodised Aluminium. Rideau Brown suits a 1970s rancher with warm tan siding.

Under the colour: a multichamber frame, fusion-welded corners, and multi-layer weatherstripping that sits in a groove, so it can be swapped out later.

Wood window frames look great until the first wet November. Then it's sanding, staining, and hoping the sill holds.

DoubleNature gives a vinyl window the look of wood, inside or out. The finish is a water-based, UV-resistant stain, so there's nothing to refinish.

It's available on Boréal casements and awnings, EuroTwist tilt-and-turns, and picture windows, in natural wood tones.

Your patio door gets opened more than any window in the house. Dog out, dog in, recycling, barbecue in the rain.

Silensia sliders run on dual-tandem nylon wheels on a raised rail, so grit and wet leaves aren't grinding under the panel all winter. The frame takes 1-inch triple-glazed units, and the fixed and sliding panels interlock, which makes them nearly impossible to remove from outside.

Pasta water boiling, rain outside, windows fogging up. That's most Vancouver kitchens in October.

A EuroTwist tilt-and-turn handles it with one handle. Turn it up and the top of the sash tilts in, never more than 4 inches. Air moves, and the wind can't slam it shut. The multi-point lock stays engaged in tilt, so you can leave it open when you head out.

Turn the handle sideways and the whole sash swings in, which means you clean the outside glass from the kitchen.

Rain season is back. Your windows notice before you do.

A Boréal casement closes against three layers of weatherstripping. The corners are fusion-welded, not glued, so there's no sealant joint to dry out and crack.

Casements go up to 42" wide by 90" tall, so you can run tall black glass like this without a wall of mullions.

Quick check for your own windows this month: press the weatherstripping. If it stays flat instead of springing back, it's done.
