🌱 That white fuzz on your microgreens tray... is it mold, or is it totally harmless?

A lot of growers panic and toss the whole tray at the first sign of fuzz — but here's the thing: true mold and simple root hairs look nothing alike once you know what to check for. And if you ARE dealing with real mold, it's usually not a watering mistake. It's your growing medium.

In our latest article, we break down:
✅ How to tell mold apart from harmless root hairs
✅ The 4 conditions mold actually needs to take hold
✅ Why some growing mediums are way more mold-prone than others

Mold on microgreens trays? Learn the real causes — moisture, airflow, organic matter — and why h**p grow mats reduce risk vs. soil, coco coir, and rockwool.

08/19/2026

Coco coir starts as a coconut husk, usually somewhere in South or Southeast Asia. It’s stripped, washed, compressed, containerised, and shipped across an ocean before it reaches a North America.

Our h**p grows on the Prairies and gets made into mats in Drayton Valley. It comes out of the pack ready.
Same job.

A lot less distance, and one fewer step in every batch.

Three Problems, One Solution 🌱

It’s uncomfortable to handle. Dry rockwool sheds fine mineral fibres. Wet the flats first, don’t work with it in an enclosed space, and hope you remembered your gloves.

It needs conditioning before you can even start. Alkaline out of the bag at pH 7.8 to 8.5, so it soaks in pH-adjusted water before a single seed goes down. Every single batch.

Now compare that to a h**p grow mat. Open the pack. Lay it in the tray. Seed it. No pre-soak, no pH-down, no dust, no gloves. Roots anchor into the fibre and lift away clean at harvest — and when you’re done, the whole mat composts with the root mass still in it.

Nothing to dispose of. Nothing to condition. Nothing to sweep up.

Swipe through for the full comparison → and if you’re running rockwool at volume, the disposal maths alone is worth a look.

From cannabis greenhouse to fresh food farm — and TerraFibre h**p fibre is part of the story. 🌱

Energro's Crossfield, Alberta facility sat vacant for two years. Now it's producing leafy greens, tomatoes, and strawberries for Alberta communities — and our biodegradable h**p fibre is replacing synthetic materials in their vertical strawberry growing towers.

No glues. No synthetic binders. Just Canadian-grown h**p, made right here in Alberta.

This is what TerraFibre is built for — clean, sustainable, high-performance materials that work just as hard in a commercial greenhouse as they do in your microgreens tray at home.

If you’re still growing microgreens in soil, this post is for you.

We’re not here to say soil doesn’t work. It does — for a while. But when you’re trying to scale, or just want a cleaner, more consistent result, the limitations add up fast.

Terra Fibre h**p grow mats are made in Canada from 100% industrial h**p fibre — no chemicals, no mess, fully biodegradable. Growers who switch rarely go back.
