Meet Codie Tamara Van Damme
Lead Hand / 4th Year Carpenter
Outline Construction Ltd.

Codie has been working in the construction industry for three years, building her career in concrete with determination and pride.

Her favourite part of the job?

Pour day 💪

“Getting to see all your hard work from base prep to building forms finally come together is thrilling. There’s so much excitement on pour day, from waiting for the concrete truck, to placing the concrete and then the finesse of finishing it. It’s a great day of hard work and high energy.”

One thing that surprised Codie about the industry is the science behind concrete mix design.

“It’s not just cement powder, rock and water. There are so many different admixtures, the cement-to-water ratio, and how it all affects the strength of the concrete. Even different blends act differently when finishing. There’s always something new to learn.”

Her advice to women considering a career in concrete or construction:

“Working in construction is hard work, especially in the concrete sector. It takes perseverance to succeed. You have to push through the rough days and long hot days, but it’s extremely rewarding. There’s nothing like stripping the formwork and seeing what you helped build.”

How to Choose a Good Concrete Placer & Finisher

Concrete placing and finishing is not something just anyone can do. It takes skill, experience, and technical knowledge. Concrete is a live material, there are no do-overs. If it’s not done right, you’re left with cracks, scaling, and costly repairs.

💡 Cheaper doesn’t mean better. A lower price up front can cost you much more down the road. Quality concrete work is an investment and it’s worth doing right.

Here’s what to look for when hiring:

✅ Ask for References & Photos of Past Work
A reputable contractor should have a solid portfolio and be proud to share feedback from previous clients.

✅ Verify Experience with Your Type of Project
Whether it’s a driveway, basement floor, sidewalk, or patio, make sure they have direct experience with similar work.

✅ Check Credentials
Are they licensed and insured? Do they follow or know about the CSA A23.1/.2 standard?

✅ Discuss the Finishing Timeline & Weather Considerations
A good contractor knows the importance of timing and weather when placing and finishing concrete. Rushing or working in poor conditions can compromise results.

✅ Understand the Curing & Sealing Plan
Ask how they plan to cure and seal the concrete. These steps are key to long-term durability, especially in Saskatchewan’s freeze-thaw climate.

They’re a great resource! Your ready-mix supplier likely works with many local contractors and can steer you toward placers and finishers they trust and have a good working relationship with.

As many of you know already, because I openly talk about it. A good friend of mine Cody Davis was killed in an at work accident, hard to believe this was 16 years ago now. This is one of my “Why’s”. It’s a big reason why we strive so hard to conduct our operation safely.

I’m thankful for Threads of Life for consistently providing support for family’s effected by work place accident’s. This fundraiser and awareness campaign brings us together to honor those who left to soon.
