Apple maggot larvae burrow through ripening apples, creating brown channels causing pitting, dimpling, and black spots where female flies lay eggs. Immediately dispose of infested fruit in your food scraps cart. (Home composting is not recommended unless maggots are killed first by cooking (> 70°C/160°F), freezing, or pureeing.)

The apple maggot is a recently introduced pest to Edmonton that can spoil some of your backyard crabapples.

Here are a few easy steps to maintain your compost pile:

🟢 Add greens: Anything from a plant
🟤 Add browns: Dry, dead materials (leaves, onion skins, paper, cardboard)
🌬️ Turn it weekly: helps the material break down faster
💧 Keep it moist: like a wrung out sponge
