Apple maggot larvae burrow through ripening apples, creating brown channels causing pitting, dimpling, and black spots where female flies lay eggs. Immediately dispose of infested fruit in your food scraps cart. (Home composting is not recommended unless maggots are killed first by cooking (> 70°C/160°F), freezing, or pureeing.)

The apple maggot is a recently introduced pest to Edmonton that can spoil some of your backyard crabapples.
