How to Prevent Condensation on Inside of Windows
Utilize fans: Whenever you are taking a hot bath or shower or running hot water in your bathroom or kitchen, you should turn on the fan to help reduce the level of moisture in the air. This also applies when you are cooking as steam can cause humidity in the air. Keep your bathroom door shut when you are showering or bathing to keep the moisture from circulation to other rooms in your home.
Store firewood outdoors: Firewood tends to accumulate water vapors and this could cause extra moisture to form in the air and contribute to the level of humidity in your home. Always store your firewood outdoors.
Keep the air circulating in your home: One of the best ways to reduce moisture in your home is to keep the air circulating. Operate your ceiling fans year-round, even for a few hours a day in the winter, to keep the air flowing. In the winter, fix the ceiling fan so it rotates clockwise to push the warm air downward during colder temperatures.
Open your windows: Open your windows when the weather is permissible, even for a short period on colder days, to help reduce the amount of moisture in the air and allow fresh air into your home.
Install storm windows: This alone can help reduce the amount of window condensation, especially during colder months.
Relocate your plants: Plants produce a lot of moisture so it is best to keep them away from windows as much as possible. Store them in one room if possible and do not overwater them
Use a dehumidifier: If you are noticing an increase in condensation, especially during the winter, you might want to purchase a humidifier. This can help keep your energy costs at a steady rate as well as decrease the amount of humidity in your home.
If you have tried the above and are still having issues with window condensation, call North Tech Windows and Doors. We can meet with you in your home to assess the state of your current windows as well as discuss options for energy-efficient window replacement.

5 Ways To Cut Down Heating Costs This Winter
With the cold season slowly coming in, now is a great time to explore different methods to keep your home's heating costs in check. Contrary to popular belief, you can maintain an ideal temperature indoors and still reduce the value of your monthly heating bill!
Fix Your Windows
Making sure that your windows are in mint condition while prepping your home for the cold season is a must. Buy and use window covering products that match your practical and aesthetic demands. Also, make sure that your windows have no cracks or seeps since that will let in cold air.
Clean or Replace Furnace Filters
Filthy furnace filters make you waste energy by restricting airflow and boosting energy use. This is why you should clean dirty filters or replace worn out filters with new ones. By doing so, your heating costs will decrease.
Seal Leaks in Your Ductwork
Even if you've already insulated your walls to minimize heat loss inside your house, you can also identify leaks in your ducts. According to statistics from Energy Star, homes with forced-air heating systems lose up to 30% of the air that circulates through ductworks because of unaddressed holes, leaks, and improperly connected ducts. You can fix these problems by placing metal tape or mastic sealant over holes or leaks to seal ducts and prevent heat loss in the future.

How To Prepare Home Before Winter Comes!
With winter rapidly approaching, now is the time to make sure your home is ready for the crazy weather incoming. Make sure to complete these tasks to ensure that your home stays safe and warm throughout the whole season.
Check the Caulk and Weather Stripping on your Windows and Doors
The stripping around your home's doors and windows is vital in preventing cold air from invading your home and heat from escaping. According to the department of energy, faulty stripping with gaps and holes accounts for up to 10% of your heating bills. By making sure all of your weather stripping is in-tact, you can save money.
Have a Professional Inspect Your Furnace
Now is the best time to make sure your furnace is ready to go once the air turns chilly. Furnaces develop several problems over time and it is always better to fix these problems early. Also, check your furnaces filter to make sure it's clean.
Conduct A Safety Check
The best way to ensure your home and your family stay safe this weekend is ensuring all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly. Replacing the batteries and making sure that everything is clear of dust allows you to keep your home safe.

How To Measure Replacement Windows
The tiniest mistake in the measurement of your windows can cause the entire installation to be thwarted off, and it always helps to have a guide when you’re learning how to measure a window.
While you are only required to measure the height and width of a window, you’ll also need to make sure that the accuracy of those measurements is spot on. It should take a total of six measurements.
For the width measurement, you’ll be measuring from the left jamb to the right jamb. You’ll also measure from the top and bottom jams. To get the height measurement of your window, start from the head and work your way down the window sill on each side.
Do a little research on the different parts of windows so you’ll know where you’re measuring from and what spots to measure to. Starting or finishing your measurements at the wrong spot can cause your measurements to be completely off, and you don’t want that to happen. If you end up measuring too far past the window jambs, then you run the risk of your window is too large to fit inside the existing window opening.
The majority of homes have windows that are of many different styles and sizes. That means you’ll have to take different measurements for each and every one. If you have windows that don’t have headers, you’ll be measuring from the top of the drywall all the way to the bottom of the window sill. If you don’t have trim on the bottom of the window sill, you’ll be measuring from one part of the drywall to the next.
If you have windows with sliding sashes, the middle measurements will be where each sash connects near the middle of the window. After all six measurements are done, you’ll resort to the shortest measurements for the width and height of each window. Some people might think that you should go with the average measurement of all of the measurements that you took, but that’s incorrect.

Styles Of Windows Grids
The purpose of window grilles is to hold your multi-paned windows in place. With window grilles, you won’t have to worry about your window breaking apart when they are being shipped to your home. For window contractors, window grilles or window grids, as they are also commonly called, are a breath of fresh air because they don’t have to worry about windows cracking during the transportation to the home they are being installed in.
Colonial Grid
With colonial-style grid windows, there is an equal amount of windows on each side of the entrance. To add an increased layer of symmetry to the window, the sash will do just that. For double-hung windows, grids are typically the same on each sash.

Craftsman Grid
Craftsman grid windows are similar to colonial grid windows, but the grids are only located on the top sash. The bottom sash will be completely clear of any grids, providing unobstructed views
Prairie Grid
The prairie type of window grids is much different in comparison to the rectangular ones. They appear to have the same symmetry of colonial and craftsman window grids, but the grids overlap and also stretch to the edges of the glass so that the view through the window isn’t obstructed.
The prairie-style window grids are commonly used in casement windows. There are no sashes, and that means you’ll be getting a lot more natural light throughout your home.
Victorian Grid
Victorian windows have long been known for their unique attention to detail. These types of windows have a large focus on asymmetry, and you’ll commonly see the windows being tall. The tall windows are used to place a large emphasis on the high peaks of the roof structure. In these types of windows, you might see a variety of colors being used, almost comparable to stained glass.
Farmhouse Grid
Farmhouse grid windows have a larger focus on functionality, but they don’t sacrifice uniqueness while achieving that. The trim on farmhouse windows is bold, and the grid patterns are basic. They usually consist of one until that separates the window sashes, and this will result in a 4×4 grid pattern.

10/26/2021

Energy-efficient doors and windows have become important, some might even say necessary, part of a modern home. Climate change and environmental science are making people more conscious of their home’s carbon footprint, and the amount of energy they use to heat and cool.

Additionally, the cost of heating and cooling our homes is growing, especially as governments introduce carbon regulations and pricing designed to curb energy use. If you are thinking about investing in energy-efficient windows and doors, and you are wondering how they work and what makes them so efficient, below are some things to keep in mind.
Glass Coating
Energy-efficient windows and doors use a low-emissivity glass known as “low-e” glass which helps to block out 90% of the sun’s UV rays. This allows the windows to keep heat inside the home when you want your home warm, and cool inside when you want your home cool. Glazing options for these windows include tints and reflective coatings.
Spacer Systems
Most energy-efficient windows use a 100% polymer-free structural foam as window insulation instead of just metal. This lowers the rate of heat loss and makes the window even more efficient. They also keep your windows condensation-free.
Double and Triple-Paned
Energy-efficient windows are also either double or triple-paned. This does, even more, to protect against UV rays and radiation. With triple-paned glass, 97% of UV rays will be blocked out, meaning your home will remain at a more comfortable, and more naturally thermoregulated temperature, all year round. It also works to prevent things inside your home (such as fabrics, wood, and paint) from fading.
Saving Money and the Environment
The ultimate aim of energy-efficient doors and windows is to make it possible to cut down on your energy consumption, both for your own sake and for the environment. The more central heating and cooling you use, the more the home costs you to run, and the more energy demands you put on the grid and the environment.
There is really no reason not to have energy-efficient doors and windows in the 21st century. Weather patterns are becoming more unpredictable, the climate is changing, and the amount of temperature adjusting that has to go on in our homes is going to continue to grow. Keep the above advantages of energy-efficient doors and windows in mind, and do what’s right for your home, your bank account, and the environment.

How to Paint Window Frames
You will need the following items to paint your window frames:
Drop cloth/old towel
Paint
Toothbrush
Several small, clean, dry paint brushes
Medium-grade sandpaper
Masking tape
Electric Drill or Screwdriver
Water
Paint Scraper
Window Frames Painting Process
Place a drop cloth or old sheet in the work area.
Using a clean, damp cloth, wipe down the window frame to remove any dirt or debris. For a deeper clean, use sugar soap. This will help both the paint and primer to better adhere.
Sand away rough edges using medium-grade sandpaper. Using your finger, locate the rough parts and gently smooth them out to prevent imperfections in the fresh paint.
Using a dry, clean paint brush, remove any dust from the window frame. A toothbrush can be used to get into narrow or smaller areas such as corners.
Remove the handles and any other hardware to prevent them from getting paint. They can be removed with a screwdriver or electric drill. Make sure to keep the hardware and screws in a safe location so you can easily reaffix them once the paint is dry.
To prevent getting paint on the window, mask off the window pane using masking tape. As well, this will ensure that you paint the window frame in smooth, straight lines.
Apply a coat of primer or undercoat to allow for a smooth finish. Ask the hardware or paint store if they can apply a dye that matches your paint color to the undercoat.
Carefully paint the window frame, beginning from a designated starting point. Use a small brush with just a small amount of paint. Apply in thin layers and use smooth, gentle strokes. Allow drying completely before moving on to the next step.
Apply the top coat in the same manner as in the above step. Make sure to paint the window frame in its entirety. Allow drying for approximately 24 hours.
Once the paint is completely dry, you may reattach any hardware to the window frame.
If you follow these steps, your window frames will nicely compliment your home! It’s easy to do. However, if you still have some doubts as to how to paint window frames, do not hesitate to call your local windows and doors company. They can offer expert advice as well as help you find replacement windows for your home!
