Quack grass!!! Such a tricky w**d that can quickly take over gardens.

It spreads through rhizomes (long horizontal roots) that travel through the soil & can pop up everywhere!!!

If even a small piece of the root is left behind it can regrow. Pulling just the top growth doesn’t help at all because the rhizomes will continue to grow & spread.

My preferred way to tackle quack grass is with a garden fork! I use it to loosen the soil & then by hand carefully pick out the quack grass, following the roots as much as possible to remove long sections intact like I did here.

Avoid tilling quack grass because every section of chopped up root that remains in the soil will just regrow.

There’s no easy fix for quack grass but staying consistent with removal helps to manage it!! I find a heavy mulch layer helps too - the quack grass roots are easy peasy to pull out of mulch.

The Garden Tour takes place on July 18th-19th and gardens are open from 10am-4pm!
This is a chance to showcase the passion and hard work you have put in your garden and inspire fellow gardeners!

We are looking for:
-fully landscaped front and back yards
-decent parking
-gardens that have a unique or exciting story
