Alberta is facing a dangerous mix of extreme heat and severe thunderstorms heading into Friday, with forecasters warning that parts of central Alberta could see large hail, damaging wind gusts, heavy rain, and soaring temperatures all at once.

A blocking pattern in the jet stream is setting the stage for several days of active, stormy weather across the Prairies. The multi-day thunderstorm threat will continue on Wednesday, with the focus on parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan

A widespread storm setup is expected to develop across much of the province, with areas around Red Deer and Edmonton sitting in a higher-risk zone for severe weather.

At the same time, a growing heat wave is pushing temperatures into the high 20s and low 30s across parts of Alberta. Meteorologists say the intense heat and unstable air are helping fuel the storm threat, creating ideal conditions for powerful thunderstorms to develop throughout the afternoon and evening.

The severe weather zone stretches from northwestern Alberta through central regions and into southeastern Saskatchewan as multiple rounds of storms are expected over the coming days.

Residents are being urged to stay weather-aware, limit outdoor activity during peak heat, and monitor for rapidly changing weather conditions, watches, and warnings.
