2025 was another busy year of handyman projects. I'm very grateful for all of the wonderful people who trusted me with their homes. I've been working on a deck reno lately. Yes, today is hot. But this tranquil back yard with its fountain sure helps. Even many birds, like the cardinal in this photo, enjoy the fountain to cool off.

From: $75/h for jobs less than 4 hours and $60/h for jobs over 4 hours
To: $70/h regardless of the number of hours.

HST will still be applied.

One example of the 100+ projects done in 2024, a rebuild of some front steps. The home-owner was concerned with the safety and function of the original steps, and with good reason. As you can see, the hand rail was not level with the steps and each step was a different height!
To save cost, I kept whatever I could, including the joists and most posts, and I even flipped over some of the floor boards since they were still in good shape and the underside colour matched the new boards quite well.
All stair stringers had to be replaced. (I was even able to find ones that have consistent step heights. :) ) To provide a stable base, I re-leveled several sidewalk slabs. The rest could be done later if the owner desires. To keep the posts from rotting, I added metal caps.
I think this project provided a much safer entry to this home and added to its attractiveness. The home-owner was very pleased.

2024 was a very productive year, with lots of different projects accomplished. I don't pretend to be able to do it ALL, but I think I came close last year. Projects included:
furniture assembly; painting, painting and more painting; toilet and faucet repairs; replacing electrical outlets, switches, and lights; replacing door handles and locks; a spring and summer full of deck and step repairs/rebuilds; and lots of little tasks for realtors to prep houses for sale.

TIME FOR A VACATION July 19-26

Well, it's been a busy spring and summer ever since the snow melted (remember cool, refreshing snow?). At one point I was walking through Home Depot and the store manager, Glen, told me I was there so often he should give me my own orange apron.

I've been repairing decks, walkways, and siding, painting, building/repairing fences, replacing electrical switches and outlets, installing bathroom fans and duct, etc. etc. etc..

So, it's time for a vacation. I'll be off July 19-26, back to work Monday July 29.

John's Handyman Service has been quite busy these last several months. As a result, the business has exceeded the criteria to be considered a "small supplier" with CRA and must now charge HST. So, beginning April 1, 15% HST will be added to my fee.

Painting is one of the most economical ways to dramatically change how a room looks and feels.

Here are some photos of a recent "pretty in pink" painting job I did in a bedroom for an 8-year-old girl. Tan and green was replaced with two wonderfully complimentary pink tones on the walls, and cream on the trim, doors and window frames.

I'm very happy with how this job turned out, but more importantly, so is this young girl. As she says,

Steve Webster, the winner of the end-of-year thank you gift, took a moment out of his busy work day (at Fredericton Hyundai) to accept his prize, a Prepared Hero fire blanket. I hope he never has to use it, but I'm glad he and his family have this protection in their home.

As 2023 comes to a close, I want to say a big "Thank you!" to the many wonderful people I had a chance to work for this year. Thank you for trusting me with your home.

The view from my "office" today.
Another roof repair after the big storm. Yes, I'm working on Christmas Eve, but I want this home owner to be able to relax over the holidays knowing their home is protected from the next rain or snow.

And once this is done, I'm going to relax.

A big thanks to all the roofers and linesmen working extra hard this past week.
