It is difficult being a garden designer. When I say I design gardens, people reply" Oh you're a landscaper." If I was a landscaper, I would say I am a landscaper. They are different beasts. I work with plants, soil, sky, site, and all the conversations with the client. I produce minoe symphonies of colour, texture, fragrance with bugs and birds and small animals adding to the magic. Painters have it easy. They paint on anything, anytime. I need property. I need clients. I didn't sign up for digging ditches, but I do to put food on the table. I look at plantings of hostas in full sun and wonder what someone was thinking. They burn and look horrible. When planted in the right spot they could look glorious until late October. I must be a ma*****st. Few people get the value of a garden designer. I am glad I do know a few.
