Explore classic design elements from the past that continue to enhance homes today. Whether it’s vented cabinets, wainscoting, or built-ins, these timeless details offer both beauty and function, whether preserved from the original structure or added for modern use. See which feature inspires you and consider ways to include it in your own space.

VENTED CABINETS: small holes in cabinet fronts add vintage charm and also provide ventilation, which helps reduce mould and mildew.
STOVE ALCOVE: make a statement with backsplash tile or stone, hidden venting, and optional open storage.
PLATE RACKS: Grabbing a plate is easy, but they also let you display your prettiest pieces.
APRON-FRONT SINKS: The depth of these sinks makes washing big pots easy, and adds old-world charm.
BUTLER’S PANTRY: traditionally a small room between the kitchen and dining room for the storage of silverware, china, glassware, and linens, but now often outfitted with coffee stations and acting as a secondary kitchen for messier food prep.
BUILT-INS: built-in benches perpendicular to a fireplace were popular in the Victorian and Arts and Crafts eras. Shelving around a fireplace is fashionable and provides the same cohesive look.
CROWN MOULDING: can cover up any cracks or irregularities at the intersection of a wall and the ceiling, but its greatest advantage may be that it instantly adds elegance to a room, and draws the eye up, which can make a ceiling look higher.
WAINSCOTTING: prevents scuffs and is often topped by a chair rail, which, in a dining room, keeps chairs from dinging the wall. Or topped with a practical peg rail shelf. It can also hide wall imperfections and wires, and protect bathroom walls from splashes.
FOLD-OUT IRONING BOARD: Skinny, shallow cabinets that hide fold-out ironing boards are a great addition to a laundry room.
FANCY HARDWARE: hardware, beautifully crafted, marries charm and function.
