It’s been a bit of a challenge dealing with this winter that doesn’t want to turn to spring. Got some supplemental heat set up to ensure that heat stays high enough through the cold nights and that I get some sleep. (My team doesn’t need to deal with me lacking sleep 🫣). Thanks to my friend Jeff for his countless hours helping me get that set up! That was beyond my scope of knowledge. But the plants are all growing and happy! And I have some blooms to share with you on this black and white day.

And stay tuned, I’ll be making the draw for the $100 gift certificate later today!

You grab whatever trellis is on sale and wonder why your cucumbers collapse by July.

Each climbing vegetable needs a different support structure. The wrong match means broken stems, poor airflow, and fruit rotting on the ground.

Flat string trellises give tomatoes the vertical plane they need to spread heavy branches evenly.

A-frame designs let cucumbers hang freely underneath — the fruit grows straight and clean instead of curling on the soil.

Wire arches suit beans and peas perfectly. Their tendrils wrap thin wire far better than thick wood.

Heavy producers like squash or melons demand reinforced arches with fabric slings under each fruit. Without support, the weight tears the vine down mid-season.

🌱 The setup rule that saves your roots:

- Install your trellis before transplanting, not after — driving stakes near established roots damages the plant you're trying to help
- Set the structure first, then plant about six inches from the base
- Anchor trellises on the north side of the bed so vertical crops don't shade shorter plants to the south

One trellis per crop type. Get that right and vertical gardening stops being a gamble 🌿

Some vegetables grow perfectly… and still shouldn’t be eaten.

The problem sometimes isn’t watering, fertilizer, or sunlight.
It’s what the roots are sitting inside for the entire season.

Warm, moist soil pulls substances out of whatever surrounds it. Plants don’t choose — they absorb. And edible crops store what reaches the roots long before leaves show any warning.

Container gardening makes us focus on soil quality.
Food safety often depends on container material.

Before planting this year, turn every pot and bucket over and look at the bottom. If you can’t identify what it’s made from, don’t use it for food crops.

The harvest begins the day you choose the container.

It’s getting to be that time of year that flowers are taking up the majority of space in my brain. I’m making lists from lists to make sure I’m ready for what’s coming. So many new plant varieties and colours for you to enjoy this year. And I’m dreaming of doing more in house planting classes. I love interacting with you all and watching you create. Getting excited for this season!!!
