Title: The Four Features of a True Church
Text: Matthew 16:18
"And I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it."
Introduction
We live in a world where almost everything changes. Nations rise and fall. Governments come and go. Businesses flourish for a time and then disappear. Even mighty empires that once ruled the world are now nothing more than subjects in history books.
But amid all the changes of human history, there is one institution that has endured for over two thousand years. It has survived persecution, false teaching, political opposition, and spiritual attacks. It has been hated, mocked, imprisoned, and even martyred. Yet it remains standing today.
That institution is the church of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Sadly, many people have a low view of the church. Some see it merely as a building. Others think it is just another religious organization. Some attend church but fail to appreciate its value in God's plan.
But how does Jesus view the church?
To answer that question, we must look at Matthew 16.
Jesus had asked His disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" Various answers were given. Some said John the Baptist. Others said Elijah. Some said Jeremiah or one of the prophets.
Then Jesus asked the most important question anyone will ever answer:
"But who do you say that I am?" (Matthew 16:15)
Peter responded:
"You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." (Matthew 16:16)
Jesus commended Peter because this truth had been revealed by the Father.
Then Jesus made one of the most remarkable promises in all of Scripture:
"And I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it."
This verse contains glorious truths about Christ and His church.
The church belongs to Christ.
The church is built by Christ.
The church is preserved by Christ.
The church is empowered by Christ.
Let us consider these truths together.
I. CHRIST OWNS THE CHURCH
"I will build My church."
The first word that captures our attention is the word "My."
In the Greek text, Jesus says:
tēn ekklēsian mou
"My church."
The little word mou means "my" possession or "belonging to me."
Jesus is making an exclusive claim of ownership.
He did not say:
"I will build a church."
He did not say:
"I will build your church."
He did not say:
"I will build Peter's church."
He said:
"I will build My church."
The church belongs to Christ.
The word church comes from the Greek word ekklesia, meaning "called-out assembly."
The church is a people called out of darkness and called unto Christ.
We belong to Him because He purchased us.
Acts 20:28 says:
"Shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood."
Think about that.
The church is not cheap in God's sight.
It cost the blood of His Son.
When you walk into a church gathering, you are among people whom Christ purchased at Calvary.
Every believer is blood-bought.
Every believer is precious to Christ.
The church belongs to Him because He redeemed it.
Furthermore, Christ is not merely the Founder of the church.
He is the Head.
Ephesians 1:22 says:
"And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church."
The Head directs the body.
The Head controls the body.
The Head sustains the body.
Therefore, Christ has the right to rule His church.
Illustration
Imagine a man who spends his entire savings to purchase a piece of land. He builds a home there with his own hands. He sacrifices time, energy, and resources for it.
No one would question his ownership.
Likewise, Christ paid infinitely more.
He purchased His church not with silver or gold but with His own precious blood.
Therefore, the church belongs to Him.
Reflection:
This truth changes how we think about church life.
The question is not:
"What do I prefer?"
The question is:
"What does Christ desire?"
The church is His.
Therefore, we must submit to His Word, obey His commands, and seek His glory.
II. CHRIST BUILDS THE CHURCH
"I will build My church."
Notice who is doing the building.
Jesus says:"I will build."
The Greek verb is oikodomēsō, meaning "to build a house" or "construct a building."
It is a future active indicative verb.
In simple terms, Jesus is making a certain promise.
He is not saying:
"I might build."
He is not saying:
"I hope to build."
He is saying:
"I will build."
The church is Christ's work.
Certainly, He uses pastors, missionaries, teachers, and faithful believers.
But they are only instruments.
Christ is the Builder.
Paul understood this truth.
In 1 Corinthians 3:6 he wrote:
"I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth."
Paul preached.
Apollos taught.
But God gave the increase.
Many churches today are tempted to trust human methods.
Some trust programs.
Some trust marketing.
Some trust personalities.
Some trust technology.
Yet none of these things can save a sinner.
No preacher can regenerate a soul.
No church program can create spiritual life.
Only Christ can save.
Only Christ can transform hearts.
Only Christ can build His church.
A Word About Peter and the Rock
Jesus said:
"You are Peter."
The Greek word is Petros.
Then He says: "Upon this rock."
The Greek word is petra.
Peter's name means a stone.
The word petra refers to a large rock or bedrock.
The ultimate foundation of the church is not Peter himself but the truth Peter confessed:
"You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
The church stands upon the truth of who Jesus is.
Illustration
When builders construct a skyscraper, they first dig deep foundations.
The higher the building, the stronger the foundation must be.
The church rests upon the unshakable foundation that Jesus Christ is Lord.
And because the foundation is secure, the building will stand.
Partial Application
When ministry becomes difficult, remember this:
The burden of building the church does not rest on your shoulders.
It rests on Christ's.
Our responsibility is faithfulness.
The results belong to Him.
III. CHRIST PRESERVES THE CHURCH
"And the gates of Hades will not overpower it."
These words have comforted believers for centuries.
Jesus never promised an easy road.
He never promised that the church would be popular.
He never promised that Christians would avoid suffering.
But He did promise victory.
The phrase "gates of Hades" is pylai hadou in Greek.
In ancient cities, gates symbolized power and authority.
They represented the strength of a kingdom.
Jesus is declaring that all the power of death and hell will never destroy His church.
Notice the phrase:
"will not overpower it."
In Greek, Jesus uses a very strong expression:
ou mē katischysōsin
This means:
"Absolutely never."
"Certainly not."
"By no means."
Jesus is guaranteeing the preservation of His church.
The Roman Empire could not destroy it.
False teachers could not destroy it.
Communist governments could not destroy it.
Modern secularism cannot destroy it.
The church may be attacked.
The church may be persecuted.
The church may suffer.
But the church cannot be defeated.
Why?
Because Christ is preserving it.
Illustration
Throughout history, many enemies have tried to bury Christianity.
Yet every time they thought the church was dead, it rose again stronger than before.
Why?
Because you cannot destroy what Christ Himself protects.
Partial Application
Perhaps you are troubled by what you see in the world.
Perhaps you fear for the future.
Remember this promise.
The church's future does not depend upon politicians.
It does not depend upon culture.
It depends upon Christ.
And Christ never fails.
IV. CHRIST EMPOWERS THE CHURCH
Christ not only owns, builds, and preserves His church.
He empowers it.
The church would accomplish nothing apart from divine power.
Jesus told His disciples:
"You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you." (Acts 1:8)
The Greek word for power is dynamis.
It refers to divine strength and supernatural ability.
The church does not operate merely by human wisdom.
Its power comes from God.
Christ empowers His church through the Holy Spirit.
He empowers His church through the Word of God.
Hebrews 4:12 says:
"For the word of God is living and active."
He empowers His church through prayer.
He empowers His church through His continual presence.
Jesus promised:
"I am with you always, even to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:20)
What a comforting truth.
Every sermon preached.
Every gospel conversation.
Every prayer offered.
Every act of service.
Christ is present with His people.
Illustration
A branch separated from the vine cannot produce fruit.
It may look alive for a while, but eventually it withers.
Likewise, the church cannot function apart from Christ.
Our strength comes from Him.
Depend on Christ.
Depend on the Spirit.
Depend on the Word.
Depend on prayer.
The strongest churches are not those with the greatest resources but those with the greatest dependence upon God.
V. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS
As we conclude, let us consider several practical responses.
1. Love the Church
If Christ loved the church enough to die for it, we should love it too.
The church is not perfect.
But it is precious to Christ.
2. Serve Faithfully
Every believer has been gifted to serve.
Find your place and serve joyfully.
3. Do Not Fear Opposition
The church has survived every attack for two thousand years.
It will survive until Christ returns.
4. Support the Gospel Ministry
Christ builds His church through the preaching of the gospel.
Commit yourself to evangelism, discipleship, and missions.
5. Trust Christ Completely
Do not place ultimate confidence in leaders.
Do not place ultimate confidence in programs.
Place your confidence in Christ.
Conclusion
Beloved, Matthew 16:18 is not merely a statement about the church.
It is a declaration about Christ.
Notice the emphasis:
My church — He owns it.
I will build — He builds it.
The gates of Hades — opposition will come.
Will not overpower it — victory is guaranteed.
The church is secure because Christ is sovereign.
The church endures because Christ is faithful.
The church advances because Christ is powerful.
And one day, the Builder of the church will return for His bride.
Until that day, let us love His church, serve His church, pray for His church, and remain faithful to the King of the church.
For Christ owns the church.
Christ builds the church.
Christ preserves the church.
Christ empowers the church.
And Christ will receive all the glory.
Amen.
