Soil matters... Same seed planted around the same time. One is in a tilled garden rich with manure and mulched with leaves annually. The other in a rototilled area next to a hay field.

If you have a plant that is in the right light conditions but isn't thriving its likely your soil needs enriching. Maybe 90% of the plant issues I see in urban areas are due to poor soil. It's rarely more complicated than that.

Baptisia or False indigo is an excellent early summer blooming perennial. It's large and sturdy, can get to 3x3 ft if it's happy and has fantastic purple flowers. It's a legume which is also pretty neat and means it's great for the soil. It has a large deep and woody root system for a perennial. It doesn't transplant particularly well and takes time to really establish and reach a good size. It's worth spending a bit for a larger one.

It's a native to North America however is not locally native.

Vegetable gardening takes up the bulk of my energy this time of year. We've had some great weather and warm nights and my tomatoes were getting way too big for their pots so I planted them before the May long weekend against my better judgement.... And now a frost... So the garden is looking a bit odd to keep things safe. Plastic over tomatoes and pots over sunflower seedlings. Frost blankets over lettuce seedlings. Peppers and eggplant seedlings are inside and everything else in the new greenhouse. Everything survived last night's cold so I'm very pleased.

Woodland phlox (Phlox divaricata)!

Spring flowering, native, perennial. These were planted last year in late summer. They've established and grown quite a bit already and are thriving. Soil is well drained with some light shade in the late afternoon.

The scent and colour are amazing. The timing of the flowers is great; after bulbs have mostly finished and before early summer perennials start flowering. These were spaced to allow them to spread into a large mass.

Fighting Canada Thistle.... It never ends. Anywhere that is disturbed these beauties pop up. The joys of a property that was previously agriculture. The very aggressive running roots are shown on pic 2. The only thing for it is to dig and get all the root and remove it completely. It becomes obsessive. Where there is one there will be many!!

Areas I tilled and solarized with plastic seem to be doing better than other areas that were just rortilled. It's very difficult to get rid of around trees and shrubs that you don't want to disturb.

Larch (Larix laricina) rees are an underused (in my opinion) native tree. They are a deciduous evergreen which makes them very unique. They have soft light green needles that burst out in spring and buds and cones that will take on a pink hue. It's a tree you will want to reach out and touch. They are very adaptable to soil conditions (but prefer soil on the wetter side) and grow very fast. These trees get large, both wide and tall. They turn a bright yellow in late fall.

This is a great tree for an open lawn, naturalization area and next to wetlands or ponds.

Tree tip: Tree guards or wraps should NEVER touch the trunks. A small space between guard and tree is essential for air flow and to prevent insect damage. Guards or wraps left on too long can result in issues like softened or rotted bark as seen in these pictures. When the wrap is removed these trees are vulnerable to bark cracking.

My name is Natasha and I am a Landscape Architect and Certified Arborist. I have worked in the private sector completing Landscape Plans and Arborist Reports focused on ecological restoration for 10 years.

I have always loved to garden and it has become my passion and focus in life. I also love to connect with people over plants and gardening and have found that this doesn’t happen enough in my day job.

I created Veridis Gardens in an attempt to feed my passion for plants, ecology and gardening and also to connect with people over their gardens. I provide design services and education to help you plan and implement the garden of your dreams.

My designs are informed by local plant communities while also taking into account site conditions which may impact plant choices. The goal of every design is to have a thriving garden with minimal input required.

I provide services ranging from detailed garden design drawings to conceptual backyard layout to hour long site visits to chat about your garden problems or ideas and start brainstorming how to achieve your goals. I follow up these visits with a brief sketch or information hand outs if required.
