What does it really take to create a pedagogically sound playground?

It is not one idea or a simple checklist. It is an ongoing process. It shows up in how a space invites child-led play, and how it supports collaboration, independence, and self-regulation.

Recently, our production, installation, sales, and design teams came together for a monthly session to explore this. Not through discussion alone, but by building, testing, and working side by side. Getting hands in the sand, experimenting, and learning from each other.

Because collaboration matters. Thinking through every detail from every perspective makes the work stronger. Each decision supports how children learn, interact, and grow together.

Because meaningful play environments do not happen by accident. https://www.bienenstockplaygrounds.com/design/

What if stakeholders didn’t just react to a design, but actually shaped it from the start?

That’s how a new project is beginning to unfold at Halfway Picnic Grounds, mile marker 10, on Pikes Peak - America's Mountain Highway.

The BIenenstock team spent time on site with stakeholders from across the Pikes Peak region, alongside members of the sacred tribes connected to the mountain. Together, they shared inspiration, walked the land, and most importantly, listened.

Before any design begins, this is the work.

Understanding what this place means to the people who know it intimately. Learning what they hope to see here in the future and why.

This is just the beginning.

A project shaped by a shared vision for what this landscape can become. More to come as it unfolds.

Today we celebrate moms everywhere.

Thank you for the ways you support curiosity, encourage exploration, and make space for children to learn through play.

By allowing room for child-led experiences, you help build confidence, independence, and a strong sense of agency.

We see the impact of what you do every day. Thank you!

The number of broken crayons in Grade 1 isn’t random, it’s a warning sign that insufficient proprioceptive input is present along the child's developmental path.

There is not enough gross motor opportunities—like pushing, pulling, climbing, and lifting—to understand the pressure and force needed when holding a writing utensil on a fine motor level.

This type of big body play also builds core strength and stability to keep the smaller muscles stable when using a crayon or pencil. When physical foundational skills are missing, it shows up in the small things. You can’t run before you know how to walk, highlighting the profound importance of early physical literacy on overall development.

The good news? It’s not hard to rebuild.

We just need to give children the right tools and opportunities to thrive. https://www.bienenstockplaygrounds.com/benefits-natural-playgrounds/

Woodworking with young children is a lost art. May 8th at the Take Me Outside Outdoor Learning Conference in Banff, Jill Bienenstock will be leading a hands-on session that invites participants to rethink what’s possible.

This session challenges participants to move past hesitation and explore how woodworking can be safely and meaningfully introduced to young children.

From math and problem-solving to fine motor development and social skills, woodworking offers rich opportunities for learning. It also supports creativity, imagination, and independence in ways few other experiences can.

If you’re attending, we’d love to connect. https://www.bienenstockplaygrounds.com/take-me-outside-2026/

What if a simple garden could transform the way children learn, explore, and connect every day?

Join us tomorrow Tuesday, May 5 at 7PM ET for a free virtual webinar created for Early Childhood Educators ready to bring meaningful gardening into their programs.

Gardening is more than an activity. It is a hands-on experience that supports cognitive, motor, and sensory development while engaging a wide range of learning styles.

In this session, you will learn what to plant, how to maintain your space, and how to foster a sense of ownership so children stay engaged and invested.

Discover how simple approaches can lead to rich learning experiences. Start small, and grow from there.

Save your spot and join us. https://www.bienenstockplaygrounds.com/education-workshops/register-for-our-webinar/

If the past has taught us anything, it’s this: questioning the way we’ve “always done things” isn’t optional. It’s essential to our future.

Take something as simple as a swing.
What if it could be more?

More connection.
More collaboration.
More joy, shared, not solitary.

Imagine 5 or 6 children swinging together. Not just playing side by side, but with each other. Building social bonds, developing self-regulation, and learning through movement and rhythm.

Because it’s never just about the component.

It’s about the mental health benefits.
The learning opportunities.
The sense of belonging we create.

It’s about designing spaces differently. Intentionally.

We have the ability to change the way we do things.
And it starts today. https://www.bienenstockplaygrounds.com/

What does it mean to create a space that truly serves a community over time?

The design for Buffalo Audubon at Beaver Meadow Preserve brings together accessibility, ecology, and play.

This project grew through meaningful collaboration with a team that truly understands natural play, and the result speaks for itself.

This is not just a playground.

It’s the definition of what a nature-based space can be.
A place designed for all ages, all needs, and all ways of engaging.
A space that continues to grow through the people who use it. Buffalo Audubon Society
