When the temps are high, comfort can be hard to find. Here are some tips for if your cooling isn't keeping up during this heat wave.
- Check your furnace filter - your furnace can't push cold air through your duct work if the filter is dirty. Always check your filter!
- Remove debris from the outdoor unit - like your furnace, the outside condenser needs to pull air in so it can work. If there is no room for air flow, it won't be able to work efficiently
- Find ways to reduce heat gain inside - close blinds / curtains, reduce use of appliances that produce a lot of heat (oven / dryer), keep windows and doors closed
- Adjust thermostat only a couple degrees at a time - while it may be tempting to do drastic temperature swings, it can cause issues with your air conditioner coil freezing. Adjust a couple degrees and let the furnace fan run (set to on), to keep air circulating
- Dehumidify! Your air conditioner's part time job is to dehumidify your home, and it will try to do that while cooling. If you have a damp basement or high humidity, a secondary dehumidifier might be needed to help your air conditioner work on cooling. Also, humidity increases how warm the air feels, so any way that decreases humidity during high temps helps keep things more comfortable.
