Have you been red tagged? And told you need to replace your furnace?

Had a call come in that just seemed suspicious to them. I went and had a second look.
First company came to do a routine maintenance on a 5 year old Lennox furnace.
The service tech red tagged the furnace, shut the gas off, and left them without heat.
His theory?
-failed heat exchanger due to some rust/water in the cabinet
-failed blower motor as he only has 90F supply air.
So he put on his sales hat, and sold this elderly couple a new furnace they didn’t need nor could afford.

I found the threaded plug in the secondary leaking a tiny bit of water, and a perfectly good blower motor with a perfect delta T.
Pulled the plug, sealed it, performed a combustion test, inspected the secondary, and let them know their furnace is in great working condition.
Sometimes having a second opinion helps.
I like to assume this was just a mistake from an inexperienced service tech, however there are service guys out there making commission.
And to top it off while I was there that same company showed up with a new furnace ready to install it. I kindly sent them home 😏

It’s aways a good idea to call and have locates done before digging. Helped out a contractor in a pinch who accidentally hit an underground high pressure gas line. With it being a copper line, I brazed in a new section to get the heat back on.
