AC Refrigerant conversion - R-134A to R-1234YF and What Technicians Need To Know.
R-1234yf will be the industry standard for the foreseeable future. R-1234yf is the modern, eco-friendly replacement for R-134a, which is being phased out due to global warming concerns.
The EPA originally approved R-1234yf for use in passenger cars at the end of 2020, and since then, it has fully replaced R-134a in that market. However, R-1234yf is not yet approved for Class 6, 7, and 8 trucks. While R-134a remains approved for off-highway applications, its phase-out for newly manufactured vehicles is on the horizon. By 2028, all newly produced off-highway vehicles will no longer use R-134a, marking a significant shift in mobile HVAC systems.
R134a and R1234yf are NOT interchangeable and conversions between R-134a and R-1234yf in automotive A/C systems is not recommended. While both refrigerants cool the vehicle, the gases require different operating pressures, oil types, and are governed by strict environmental laws. R-1234yf ports are uniquely shaped and larger than R-134a ports to prevent accidental cross-contamination.
