First, it tells you the drip zone is actually running. Instead of digging around in the mulch trying to figure out if water is flowing, you can see it right away.
Second, it marks the blow-out access point for fall winterization — no guessing, no hunting around when the season ends.

When you’re irrigating shrub beds with ground cover this dense, a 12-inch spray head is often the right call.
A standard 4” or 6” head would struggle to clear the plants and end up watering the foliage instead of the soil. The 12” riser gets the spray above the canopy so water actually reaches the root zone — where it needs to go.
You could run a drip line in a bed like this, but with mixed shrubs and ground cover at different heights, spray coverage is more even and easier to adjust.
Simple upgrade, better results. 🌿
