🌿 Transplanting plants properly is all about protecting the root system and setting the plant up for long-term success.
At Keitz Landscape, we start by carefully digging around the plant instead of prying it out of the ground. That helps preserve a large root ball and reduces transplant shock.
From there, we dig a new hole roughly 1.5× the size of the root ball, fill it with water to check drainage, then amend and prepare the area before backfilling. Proper preparation below grade makes a huge difference above grade. 🌱
Healthy roots, proper drainage, and careful installation all play a role in whether a transplant merely survives — or truly thrives.

🌿 3 Spray Techniques Every Plant Lover Should Know
When applying foliar sprays like insecticidal soap, nutrients, or pest control products, how you spray matters just as much as what you spray.
💧 Spray to Wet
A light, even mist that coats the leaf surface without any dripping.
• Leaves look evenly damp
• No runoff
• Used for light foliar feeding or preventative sprays
💦 Spray to Drip
Apply enough product that droplets form and begin to fall from the leaves.
• Full leaf coverage (top and bottom)
• Slight dripping is normal
• Best for most pest and disease control applications
🚿 Spray to Runoff
A heavy application until liquid is running off the plant.
• Maximum saturation
• Product visibly dripping off foliage and into soil
• Used only for heavy infestations or specific situations
🌱 Pro Tip: Most sprays work best when you spray to drip — enough coverage without wasting product.

✂️ Pruning tip from Keitz Landscape 🌿
When it comes to pruning, the type of stem matters more than you might think.
For herbaceous perennials with soft stems, we prefer to make a slight angled cut just above a node. Softer tissue holds moisture more easily, which can increase the risk of fungal and bacterial decay, so angling the cut helps water shed off and allows the tissue to dry faster while encouraging clean regrowth from the node.
For woody perennials and trees, we switch techniques. A clean cut just outside the branch collar (following its natural angle, away from the bark ridge) reduces unnecessary wound size and allows the plant to seal the area more efficiently through natural compartmentalization.
Small technique changes = healthier plants 🌱

🌿 The 3-Cut Method for Safe Tree Pruning
When removing larger branches, the 3-cut method prevents bark tearing and helps maintain long-term tree health.
✂️ 1. Undercut (relief cut)
Make your first cut on the underside of the branch, slightly away from the branch collar (back bark ridge). This removes compression and prevents bark from tearing when the branch drops.
✂️ 2. Top cut (removal cut)
Move further out on the branch and cut from the top down. Once the undercut is in place, the branch will break cleanly between the two cuts without stripping bark.
✂️ 3. Final collar cut
Remove the remaining stub by cutting just outside the branch collar (back bark ridge) at a right angle to the branch, minimizing surface area while still preserving the collar.
🌱 Why it matters:
The branch collar contains natural growth hormones that help the tree compartmentalize and heal properly. Cutting into it can slow recovery and increase decay risk.
Proper pruning is about more than appearance — it’s about tree health and structure.

When IPM shows up at home 🐦

This morning I had a very determined visitor — a robin repeatedly attacking its reflection in my window.

Territorial birds see reflections as a rival invading their space, and this one was so persistent it actually injured itself. I was getting close to calling wildlife protection.
Instead, I put Integrated Pest Management into practice at home:
Identify the problem ✔️
Understand the behaviour ✔️
Choose the least harmful solution ✔️

No chemicals. No traps. No relocation.

I simply removed the trigger by covering the reflective window from the outside and cleaning the area. Within hours, the behaviour stopped.

I’ll leave the covering up for a few days and monitor to make sure the robin has moved on safely.

IPM isn’t just for landscapes — it’s a mindset.
Work with nature, not against it.

Weeding done right 🌱

In this video, I’m demonstrating two of my go-to tools on the job — the hori knife and the oscillating hoe. The key to effective weeding isn’t just clearing what you see… it’s getting the root.

The hori knife is one of the most versatile tools out there — with its serrated edge, it makes cutting through tough roots quick and efficient. Pair that with an oscillating hoe for fast surface work, and you’ve got a solid system.

At the end of the day, every landscape maintenance professional should always have: ✔️ A solid pair of pruners
✔️ A hori knife

Tired of leggy, tired hydrangeas? 🌿✂️
In today’s video, I’m showing how a hard prune can completely reset your hydrangeas and bring them back to life.

We cover:
• How to prune with confidence (even on older plants)
• What basal node growth is — and how to encourage it
• How to clean out weak, scraggly growth
• Keeping your hydrangeas full, healthy, and at the perfect height

Don’t be afraid to cut them back — sometimes the best growth comes from a fresh start 💪🌸

Follow along and give your garden the reset it deserves.
