-27 C in the forecast overnight February 3/4. Coldest temperatures in 20 years! Potential to set a new low temperature record for this date.

Please adjust your air-exchanger setting in extreme temperatures but don't wait for -27 C. I recommend you adjust settings when outdoor temperatures drop below -15 C.

At Greenfields Indoor Air Solutions, the design, installation and maintenance of residential ventilation systems is a big part of our business. An air-exchange system is designed to bring fresh ventilation air into your home comfortably but there are times when you need to adjust the setting. An extreme outdoor temperature is definitely one of those times. At -27 C please make sure your air-exchanger control is set to intermittent, but don't wait for -27 C. I recommend you adjust your setting when temperatures drop to -15 C. If you don't have an intermittent setting turn the air-exchanger off. If the air-exchanger is turned off, open a couple of windows, just a crack, for ventilation.

Part of what we do at Greenfields is service air-exchangers. To avoid problems, including potential damage to your air-exchanger, please take care to keep the fresh air intake clear of snow. If the snow is light and fluffy your system can easily suck the snow in. In those conditions, especially if the wind is strong it's not a bad idea to turn your air-exchanger off or run it on the intermittent setting. Too much snow drawn in can lead to excessive condensation in the duct which can reach the air-exchanger and core. That water can freeze up as temperatures drop, potentially causing damage.
