How do you spot a less-than-preferred contractor?

Here’s the tricky part: many contractors can present well at first.

They may have a polished pitch, say the right things, offer a lower price, and make the project sound simple. But before you hand over your hard-earned money, it is so important to do your due diligence.

Money matters. Budgets matter. Everyone is being careful with spending right now — and you should be.

But what you do not want is to pay for the same project twice because the first job was rushed, poorly planned, unfinished, unsafe, or not done properly.

Before choosing a contractor, ask questions. Look at reviews. Ask what is included. Get the quote in writing. Understand the warranty. Ask about timelines, permits, materials, and what happens if costs change.

A preferred contractor will not make you feel bad for asking questions. They will welcome them.

A less-than-preferred contractor may avoid details, rush your decision, dismiss your concerns, or make you feel like you are being difficult for wanting clarity.
