Customer called us out to repair a flooded basement. She mentioned the previous owner claimed the property had “never flooded in 35 years.”

Once the restoration company removed the bottom 2 feet of drywall, the story changed quickly.

The crew found:
• No insulation or poly in the bottom 4 feet of the wall
• Clear evidence of previous flooding
• Signs of poor-quality repairs and cover-up work from past damage

Unfortunately, this is something I see more often than people realize. Water damage can get costly and insurance companies rarely compensate fairly, but please hire a professional that has great references and a proven track record of doing it right.

In this particular case the cost of insulation/poly and labour to replace was under $500. But the energy losses over years of Manitoba winters, though incalculable, I’m sure exceeded that several times over.

Customer reached out with two concerns after a renovation they completed 4 years ago:

- Cracking along drywall joints where a wall had been removed.

- Noticeable cold air coming through those cracks

First step was an attic inspection—and sure enough, the vapour barrier hadn’t been sealed properly.

We repaired the poly, addressed the drywall cracking and topped things off by re-insulating the entire attic to R50 with blow-in insulation.

Solid fix, improved comfort, and a home that performs the way it should.
