How many times can you refinish a hardwood floor?

That’s a common question—but it may not be the most important one to ask.

Many mid-range and premium hardwood products can be refinished multiple times. The bigger consideration is that floors designed to handle repeated refinishing can cost significantly more upfront.

So before paying a premium simply for future refinishing potential, consider how long you realistically plan to keep the floor and what your project actually needs.

The floor you choose isn’t the only thing that matters.

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make during a flooring project is focusing heavily on the finished flooring while overlooking what’s underneath it.

Your **subfloor** needs to be flat, level, and stable before the new flooring goes down. If it isn’t properly prepared, even a high-quality floor can develop problems.

If your budget is tight, it may make more sense to spend less on the flooring product and more on proper subfloor preparation.

Instead of saying, “That quote is too high,” deconstruct it.

Look at:

• Estimated labor hours
• Effective hourly rate
• Scope and quality of work

For example, a large project may have a high total simply because the scope is extensive—not because the contractor’s labor rate is unreasonable.

The better question isn’t **“Is this quote high or low?”**

If a contractor is effectively billing around $80–$85 per hour, the next question is whether the scope of work justifies that rate.

Break the estimate down:

• How much is materials?
• How much is labor?
• How many labor hours are included?

• What level of quality and expertise are you paying for?

For example, $8,000 in labor doesn’t necessarily mean one person is working for 100 hours. A three-person crew could complete those labor hours much faster.

The goal is simple:

Don’t just ask whether the quote is expensive. Ask what you’re getting for the price.

So before deciding that a quote is “too high,” ask:

**What am I actually getting for the price?**

There are two common misconceptions about running a successful contracting business:

**“I have to be an expert at everything.”**

Or:

**“If I’m great at my trade, everything else will take care of itself.”**

Neither is true.

You need to be skilled at your trade, but you also need to understand the fundamentals of sales, marketing, quoting, project management, and financial management.

That doesn’t mean you have to do everything yourself.

As the owner, you’re responsible for the business but you don’t have to be the expert in every area.

Strong partnerships and the right people can help fill the gaps and give your business the support it needs to grow.

**You don’t need to do everything. You need to build a business that can do everything well.**

You don’t have to be an expert in every area of your business.

But you do need someone who is.

Many painting contractors know what they *planned* to spend on labor and materials, but never go back to see what actually happened.

That means they may not know which projects are profitable, what their true overhead looks like, or whether the business is actually making money.

You don’t need a full-time accountant to get started. But you do need reliable financial tracking and someone who can help you understand the numbers.

**You don’t have to know everything. You do have to take responsibility for everything.**

If you’re running a business without financial statements, you’re making decisions without seeing the full picture.

You need to know your revenue, cost of goods sold, operating expenses, and actual profitability, not just how much money is sitting in your bank account.

Customer deposits can make your cash balance look healthy even when the business is operating at a loss.

You don’t have to be a financial expert to run a successful business. But you do need the right people and systems to help you understand the numbers.

**Being great at your trade is one skill. Running a profitable business is another.**
