Oh deer! 🦌 It’s a common problem in Lethbridge and can be a huge frustration to wake up to find our four-legged friends have not so helpfully deadheaded your garden for you.

Here are some annuals that you can use to mitigate the problem! Deer tend to not enjoy plants with high scent or rough texture.

- For hot sunny areas, lantana can be a great option. Nicely branching, with a variety of vibrant colours, they have a rougher leaf and lemony scent.
- Snapdragons, Cosmos, Salvia, Marigolds: these are all great bedding out options as well! They come in a variety of colours, and you have different height options.
- Datura: every part of these are poisonous, so keep that in mind if you have pets or small children that like to snack around your yard 😉. The blooms are amazing!
- Variegated Swedish Ivy: this is a mounding, trailing plant that works well in pretty well any spot. It can be tucked in unobtrusively to deter deer, and can be a great option for shadier areas.
- Grasses: generally, the texture of grass is not overly tempting for deer, but this Pheasants Tail grass in particular has been noted for deer-resistance.
- And if you just have persistent deer, or you want to stick with what you like, we also have Bobbex. A foliar spray that lasts up to 21 days, it really is effective! Just remember to spray at night before you head in, and reapply after rainfall.

Let’s talk SCENT-sational plants! These plants are beautiful, and smell amazing to boot!

- Stock: these are super for colour and scent! Evening scented stock likes to be tucked into spaces, away from sight to hide the gangly stems. The smell wafts through your yard in the evening, and it’s heavenly! Vintage Mix and Hot Cakes Mix both love full sun, and smell amazing as well.
- Evening Scentsations Petunias: Love the full sun, and as the name suggests, provide great scent in the cooler evenings.
- Heliotrope: These are a powerhouse of an annual! Along with the wonderful vanilla scent, they provide some height which works well in beds. The pollinators also love it!
- Alyssum/Lobularia: Both of these are great for summer heat. They bloom all season long, not missing a beat. Lobularia is a great trailing version of alyssum, which is perfect for edging a bed or in pots. Comes in whites, lavenders, purples!
