Greenhouse update. Long story short - greenhouse collapsed, greenhouse scrapped, new greenhouse expense not in the cards, a little smaller hoop house to cover the existing raised beds installed and plants are in the ground!
Longer version. Earlier this year we shared photos of the greenhouse after 2 back to back winter storms with rain in between. The twisted mess of metal and broken poly panels that were once a 10x26’ green house are now at the scrap yard or dump. A few good panels and door frames were kept as spares as we have another of the same type of green house (just way smaller) so we have some spares if needed.
As with so many things, prices are considerably higher than 4 years ago so we opted for a simpler, less expensive solution. Our wind is unrelenting. If we do another greenhouse at some point it will be one with a foundation and wood frame. For now we really just need to cover two 3.5 x 20’ low raised beds we use for lisianthus and eucalyptus and basil - the plants for the flower farm that produce so much better for us when under cover.
So, she isn’t fancy and there are still some tweaks needed for improved wind tolerance but we’ve had 12 hours+ of heavy wind and FarmHer Brenda spent 3 hours this morning topping up soil and planting and it seems to be holding. Will it hold on our 80km wind days? Our guess is as good as yours! For now, it’s here, the beds are covered and the lisianthus, eucalyptus and basil are planted.
In flower farming, like any farming, you take things one day and one risk at a time. Though if Mother Nature felt inclined to give us less heavy winds, we would not argue!
