It is the coming together of flowers, food and art, feeding both the body and the soul. We are at the Lion’s Head Farmers Market every Saturday from 9-12 (9-1 on long weekends). Look for us in the pavilion. This year we will have a DIY Flower Bar at Peninsula Pet alternating Thursday and Fridays and at The Art Shoppe at Miller Lake every second Sunday. Those will start later in June and we’ll post

days and hours. At the farm, we are open when we are available and the big open flag will be at the end of the drive.

It’s hard to portray the size of this peony bush. Easily 4’ across and absolutely loaded with buds. This plant is about 10 years old and pre-dates the flower farm. We have 2 more of this variety almost the same size. We now have just under 30 peony plants. Quite a few of those are now in year 3 and have bulked up nicely with stems we will be able to cut. Others are in year 2 and about 10 were from last fall’s planting (some roots did not survive the winter). The smaller ones will be mostly disbuded so energy goes to growing the plant vs producing a flower. We now have a mix of early, mid and late season varieties that will stagger some bloom times. The second pic is a few early blooms from our pink lilac that starts blooming after the white and purple varieties are in full bloom. Perennials are definitely the needed foundation for our flower farm!

Greenhouse update. Long story short - greenhouse collapsed, greenhouse scrapped, new greenhouse expense not in the cards, a little smaller hoop house to cover the existing raised beds installed and plants are in the ground!

Longer version. Earlier this year we shared photos of the greenhouse after 2 back to back winter storms with rain in between. The twisted mess of metal and broken poly panels that were once a 10x26’ green house are now at the scrap yard or dump. A few good panels and door frames were kept as spares as we have another of the same type of green house (just way smaller) so we have some spares if needed.

As with so many things, prices are considerably higher than 4 years ago so we opted for a simpler, less expensive solution. Our wind is unrelenting. If we do another greenhouse at some point it will be one with a foundation and wood frame. For now we really just need to cover two 3.5 x 20’ low raised beds we use for lisianthus and eucalyptus and basil - the plants for the flower farm that produce so much better for us when under cover.

So, she isn’t fancy and there are still some tweaks needed for improved wind tolerance but we’ve had 12 hours+ of heavy wind and FarmHer Brenda spent 3 hours this morning topping up soil and planting and it seems to be holding. Will it hold on our 80km wind days? Our guess is as good as yours! For now, it’s here, the beds are covered and the lisianthus, eucalyptus and basil are planted.

In flower farming, like any farming, you take things one day and one risk at a time. Though if Mother Nature felt inclined to give us less heavy winds, we would not argue!

On this lovely Sunday morning FarmHer Brenda is mixing up a repellant to hopefully protect our sunflower seedlings (and some veg seedlings) from the cute but evil chipmunks that seem to love the farm. And FarmHer Meg is delivering the pictured bouquets to Peacocks Foodland in Tobermory. Bouquets are also available today at Bains General Store in Ferndale and The Art Shoppe in Lion’s Head.

May all your critter battles be successful, but in any case flowers will brighten the day;)
