The herbal tea referred to is New Jersey Tea, made from the Ceanothus americanus plant. American colonists dried its leaves and roots to create a tax-free alternative to British tea during the Revolutionary War.

What is the tall, fast-growing spider flower, native to South America and popular in cottage gardens?

The answer is Cleome. This plant is native to South America and West Indies. It is cultivated as an annual in Ontario. Cleome hassleriana made its debut in English gardens through the West Indies in 1817. Its blossoms resemble spiders, and the plant can grow up to 5 feet tall.
