Smoke pouring into your house every time you light a fire is one of the more frustrating problems we get asked about.

If you've already had your chimney swept and confirmed there's no blockage, the cause is usually something you can't see.

Air pressure and wind do strange things to a chimney. An exhaust fan running somewhere in the house can pull air back down through the fireplace and bring smoke with it.

Other times it's just turbulence around the outside of the chimney on a windy day.

My advice is to get a professional in to take a look. Fixing it can take some trial and error before you figure out the cause.

Most people assume chimney fires are the main cause of house fires from wood burning systems. In many real world cases, the actual cause is a modification made years after the original installation.

One example I've seen firsthand is insulation being packed around a wood burning chimney in the attic. These systems require open air space around them. Even noncombustible insulation will trap excessive heat and create dangerous conditions over time.

Another common issue is combustible framing or finishing materials installed too close to a built in fireplace. Many fireplaces use factory engineered standoff systems to maintain safe clearances, and we've seen cases where those components were removed after installation and a fire followed.

Mounting a TV above your fireplace and worried about the heat? This one comes up a lot.

First, check the fireplace specs to confirm a TV can even go above it. After that, a mantel can help push heat away from the screen, but the material matters. If you're working close to a fireplace that already runs hot, look at something non-combustible like a faux lightweight concrete composite or a steel mantel.

The part people tend to miss is how far it sticks out. It needs to protrude past the finishing face of the fireplace enough to actually deflect heat away from the TV.

Most homeowners pay for a gas fireplace cleaning without really knowing what they're getting.

According to the Ontario Gas Code, all gas appliances should be maintained annually. When we come out, the first thing we do is walk through the unit and look for any red flags. Our technicians do this every day, so they tend to catch things that get overlooked elsewhere.

From there, we paint the inside of the firebox with high heat paint to protect against corrosion. We clean the glass with a specialty product that also conditions and seals it.

We refresh the ember material and make sure every log is positioned correctly.
