Check out this beautiful front porch our team is restoring on a heritage home in Woodfield!

We were brought on to revitalize this porch by eliminating the rot that had spread throughout. To begin, we first cut out the affected substructures before rebuilding each portion with pressure-treated lumber. The rot was most prevalent in the bottoms of each column and along the outer edges of the handrail.

Our team created a 10” solid-wood cylinder to restore the base of the affected column. We also added 2x6” pine to the top and bottom rails to supplement the undersized members present. Now, this handrail will properly distribute weight for years to come.

Finally, we applied a fresh coat of black paint to complement the rest of the house. With a beautiful front porch, this owner can comfortably enjoy the warm summer weather.

What architectural styles are common in Victorian-era houses?

The stylings we most often see throughout our projects include Gothic Revival, Italianate, and Ontario Cottage. Each of these types have their own characteristics that make them unique from one another.

Gothic Revival is a very popular style that is defined by steeply pitched roofs, pointed-arch windows, and elaborate upper-trim. With these characteristics, Gothic Revival houses are reminiscent of medieval castles and cathedrals.

The next house-styling was given the name “Italianate” due to its similarities to Italian villas. With their low-pitched roofs, elaborately carved, paired brackets and round bullseye windows in the upper portion, you can see how similar they are to these European houses.

Finally, Ontario Cottage houses are single-story homes that are most distinguishable by their hip roofs. These roofs can have a flat portion in the centre that connects to each edge. We often see an interior layout that is focused around the centre hall and the main portion of the house is a perfect square.

Our team constructed this geodesic sphere for Burning Man in 2015.

This unique shape was first invented by R. Buckminster Fuller in the mid-1900s. Fuller was an American architect and futurist who popularized the use of geodesic domes throughout the globe. The triangular elements of these shapes evenly distributes any stress throughout the structure. It is this feature that has allowed many other architects to build elaborate geodesic domes as large as 216m tall!

We designed this structure with 300 fabricated aluminum struts. By ensuring every dimension was perfect, this dome withstood the toughest conditions.

A custom tarpaulin was then deployed so the structure could be used as an enclosed kitchen at this world-renowned festival.

Check out how well these refinished windows and doors match the colourful brickwork on this Old North home!

Our team was brought on to restore the finish on all the wooden surfaces surrounding this house. These included the windows, doors, shutters, and trim around the exterior. Sections within most of the sills and sashes were replaced to ensure everything functioned properly. Our team also treated the front-door portico and Greek-revival pediment to enhance its decorative design.

We like to remind everyone that proper preparation prevents poor performance. By taking our time to first clean and sand each area, we created a smooth exterior finish that will last for many years.

It is always so satisfying to see the final result of our team’s hard work.

When we first began restoring this home, the second-floor balcony door was in need of suitable trim to complete its vintage look. Our team first removed the drop ceiling to bring back the hallway’s original 10-foot height. Then, we installed this custom-made poplar trim along the perimeter of the door.

Each of these pieces were handmade by a skilled millworker in London. He created his own custom knives before using them to fabricate this beautiful trim.

With stylized, one-of-a-kind features, this balcony door complements the essence of this Victorian house perfectly.

Whenever restoring a Victorian feature, we work to enhance it down to the smallest detail.

Our team is always excited to install the finishing touches like these, since they truly complete the look of a room. Check out some of the beautiful door hardware we have utilized for the restoration of this Woodfield home. Each of these period-appropriate pieces were either salvaged from this house, or sourced from other projects.

When reusing handles and hinges like this, we always fully clean them to look new once again. By preserving these historical pieces, we can maintain the well-made architectural elements that define the Victorian era.
